Re: The 64-cup

Guten Abend Alle,

let's step forward with next match, a balanced one: Novag Carnelian II vs Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor. According to my private CElo ranking, over 100 games, the Carnelian II is expected to win 57 points and the Maestro should score the rest, therefore 43 points. Very close, isn't it?

Well, the expectation is fulfilled: 1 point each from this match, a slightly deceptive result as it is the outcome of two draws after rather shy chess played by both. Both chess computers play pretty restrained and miss several opportunities for more interesting fights.

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

round 2 for group 4 starts with VEB RFT Chess-Master Diamond + PM11 versus Hegener & Glaser Mephisto I-X. Again a balanced match, in the same area as the previous one, as far as probabilities are concerned: theoretically 56 points out of 100 in favor of the brikett.

The first game with Diamond playing White is thoroughly balanced from a material standpoint; the Diamond offered twice a nice opportunity for the 1X which failed to spot it. The game ends in a draw.

I am happy with the second game, where the Chess-Master achieves a win: it is such a nice device! Of course, both computers miss some opportunities across the whole game, but the Diamond finds the killer move 27 ... Bxf3! and the 1X will never recover from that . At some point it could have drawn per repetition, but failed to play it.

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

as the Tiger Grenadier scored zero points after meeting the Chess Genius Pro, it now has more than a chance to come back, facing the modest Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor.

As I use specific settings for the Grenadier evaluation, maybe worth mentioning these: Shield (King safety) raised from 20 to 25%, and Eval Pawn from 0 to 2%. Of course they should not much influence the result of this unbalanced match; nevertheless the Stadlbauer Maestro has been a rather fine trainer as it did not commit blatant blunders; just being slowly overwhelmed. Both games in 49 moves; funny isn't it?

Re: The 64-cup

Hello,

now the Mephisto Milano v2.00 (a standard Milano equipped with a Nigel Short ROM) meets the Novag Carnelian II. Odds are over 96% in favor of the Schröder program...

In the first game, the Carnelian II playing with the dark pieces loses too much material far too early, starting with move 12. Then the game just looks like a mouse trapped under the paws of a big cat.

Playing with the light pieces in the second game, the Carnelian II fares much better, pretty on par with the Milano v2 during 25 moves or so. It then tries to gain some material, capturing a supported Pawn with its Bishop, simultaneously unveiling a threat on the ennemy Bishop. Unfortunately, the threatened Bishop can escape with tempo... Wrong calculation, little Carnelian...

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

last match for round 2 faces the Millenium Chess Genius Pro and the Mephisto Europa A. With roughly 600 CElo more, the CGP has nothing to worry about.

The first game is just a steady glide down for the Morsch program; while a clear error during the second one throws it down as soon as move 19.

Re: The 64-cup

Good morning all,

round 3 for group 4 starts with Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor vs H&G Mephisto 1-X.

The first game is definitely balanced, a short one as the position after move 19 is repeated three times (announced by the brikett with a dot in the middle position in the display, whilst the Schachprofessor didn't announce it).

The second game is much more interesting, the 1X playing as White commits a positional blunder that switches the game to the bad side for it.

Re: The 64-cup

Guten Abend Alle,

Odds are roughly 2/3 to 1/3 for the next clash, Novag Carnelian II vs VEB RFT Chess-Master Diamond + PM11. With 1.5 points to 0.5, the match outcome is 3/4 to 1/4, therefore a rather good score for the Carnelian II.

But zooming into the games, the Carnelian II cannot much boast about this performance:
- indeed it won as Black in the first game, but very early the Diamond clumsily tried to avoid an expected capture, sacrificying a Bishop for nothing;
- and in the second game as White, after another mistake from the Diamond (and a very early one) it outrageously dominates the game, with a Rook and a Pawn material advantage roughly for 20 moves or so, just to deceptively draw the game with a three-rep.! And cherry on the cake, it announced it, therefore the program should have been aware before playing the drawing move...

Hi Tibono,

I noticed too this type of unnecessary drawing with the Carnelian II.
The only explanation I can think of, is that the 3-time repetition detection routine stands loose from the position evaluation routine, so has no effect on the evaluation value?!

Regards, Paul

Re: The 64-cup

hello all,

next match has been a rather exciting one; with the Mephisto Europa A giving sort of a lesson to the Tiger Grenadier, which can feel very lucky with a shared score. As far as hardware is concerned, it is a very modest 6301Y with 2 actual Mhz facing a powerful SH7034 @20Mhz (that's 13.7 times faster according to my estimation!)

As often, the Grenadier chooses rather unusal openings, but funny enough is out of its book sooner than the Europa - and this is true in both games!

During the first game as White, the small Morsch program plays better chess than the Donninger's one. I am not a strong player but I could immediately spot some odd moves from the Grenadier - no need for any deep analysis to tag them as questionable. The Grenadier only saves itself thanks to a hasty Pawn promotion, the materialist Europa A allowed itself to be tempted with, neglecting a corridor mate threat.

In the second game with opposite castlings, both devices prepare attacking the opponent King's corner, the Grenadier can push forward three linked Pawns whilst the Europa A is faster with one single storming Pawn the Grenadier failed to consider dangerous enough. As soon as move 34 the King of the Grenadier is disloged from its corner and threatened by no less than two Rooks, a Queen and two Bishops... that could have mate in 4. That's a bit deep for the Europa, so the fight will last much longer, nevertheless ending in a win for the small device.
