The top playing surface has now been upgraded so you don't see the unlit led rings so much. I have spoken to a couple of owners who have verified this.

I bought one second hand as I considered the price of a new one too high. The reason why I bought one was for three reasons.

1. I like the size of the playing area.

2. The controversial led rings is the concept brought forward from the iOS app that I was involved with and I think that they work really well and are something not seen before with a chess computer.

3. I really like the 'Expert' level because I really like the way Stockfish plays as it surprises me all the time.

At this present time my Centaur is carefully stored away with my other chess computers as I am presently playing against my Mephisto MMII with Ulf Rathsman's excellent engine.
