AW: The 64-cup

Hi,

now the Saitek/Mephisto "Chess Challenger" tuned to 32Mhz has to play the Millenium "The King Performance". With close to 390 CElo less (that's about 1 to 9 odds), the "Challenger" deserves its name and won't be much more than a sparring partner .

The first game is an endurance test for both, lasting 88 moves. Not really worth the replay, you can save your time.

The second one is more interesting, a shorter one, and the Chess Challenger playing as Black castles long. That is an opportunity for the H8 bug to occur later on, and it actually happened! I was immediately alerted, as the Chess Challenger moved instantly its Rook from the h8 square after an ennemy move it had little chances for having pondered about it. Bingo, the move is a mistake. The Chess Challenger was already dominated, therefore I doubt the outcome of this game would have not been a loss, anyway. No big an influence on the match, so.

For fun and for information, once the game has been completed, I set the position up and let the Chess Challenger move: it plays the same Rook move, instantly. No pondering could have been involved after a position setup, thus indeed a H8 bug occurrence. I also used my trick to identify the move it would have computed, assuming no H8 bug: setup the position one half move before and White to move; make the White move obvious or forced, enable the rotating display of variation to ply2 (+rd:2) and let the Chess Challenger think the appropriate time.
In this case, I used this position:
with a honey-pot Queen to be captured. White move is of course NxQ displayed as ply 1; and ply 2 displayed by the thinking Chess Challenger is Nf5 instead of Rg8.

First time the H8 bug appears during the 64-cup (18 games played so far by either Chess Challenger, standard or tuned; and two more games to come, as the standard device will play quarter-final games; and is assumed not to survive these).
