I own a couple of these. Both were provided with a Saitek AC Adaptor, output 9V 300mA, positive center as you mentionned. It is not a regulated adaptor, so without any device load I could measure 16,4V output.

About the LED issue, I would suggest trying to run on batteries, thus avoiding any doubt about a potentially incorrect mains adaptor effect.
