thanks a lot for the interesting response.
Nevertheless, I just find a square approximation not useful, I stay with my log2-function.
If I assign 1Mio nodes to 2.400ELO, the formula does not change a lot:
throttled (w/o 1Mio/2.400): ELO=111*lg2(nps)+311
unthrottled (w 1Mio/2.400): ELO=102*lg2(nps)+400
If you use the unthrottled formula for the throttled region (1.050...1.850ELO), the difference is very small (-38...+60ELO).
