Re: DGT Centaur - Der Thread
I'm new on Schachcomputer.info and this is my first contribute. I can read German, but writing is so much easier in English for me.
I'm a bit surprised about many Centaur opinions and comments about shortcomings. I own the Centaur for a few weeks now and I think I belong exactly to the target group DGT had in mind for the Centaur.
I'm a fairly low level home chess player who wants to play a game of chess whenever it suits me and against an opponent that doesn't wipe me off the board. And that's exactly what I got. An opponent with my own strength. No difficult setting to make, just set up the pieces and play. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but it's always fun. I'm not interested in analyzing the games or make an archive of them. My kind of players is what DGT had in mind when they developed the Centaur.
Let's say that the Centaur is like a Fiat Panda. When I buy a Fiat Panda it's not reasonable to demand that it drives like a Mercedes, with all it's features. But that's exactly what I read here all the time:
- Why can't I export my game?
- Why can't I play online?
- Why can't I see the depth of analyzing?
- Why isn't it made of wood?
- Why doesn't it have blue tooth?
- Why can't I make multiple profiles?
- Why, why, why....
Because the Centaur isn't made for players with these demands!
There are other chess computers that do have these possibility's and you should purchase one of those (for more money). If DGT had to fulfill all those demands the price would be double. I read on Schach.computer that the Centaur is a huge selling succes. They sell more Centaurs in June then other chess computers with Christmas. Probably because there are so many players like me who think that €349 is a fair price for what they want (a Panda chess computer) and they don't want to pay €700 for a lot of features they don't use (a Mercedes chess computer). Even if you compare with the new The King Performance. In the base it is the same price, but if you want to play online or with a battery then it will cost you an additional €155, that's +45%. €349 and €505 is for me not the same price segment.
I probably am thinking way out of the box in compare to most of the members here, but I think most home chess players do.
Of course you can play a computer tournament with the Centaur, but it wasn't made for that purpose.
What I think so far off the Centaur?
I think it's perfect for players like me. Move the pieces in the most natural way there is. The lightning circles is a brilliant solution. Build in battery, so I will take it to Spain this winter and play every day outside. Of course wood looks better, but it doesn't make me play better. The only disadvantage of the plastic is that's it's static and it attracts dust and hairs (if you own dogs like me).
Should I ever win the lottery I will buy the Rolls Royce Revelation II, just the looks of it is worth it. Until then I will be very happy with my Centaur.
Of course I'm very curious what you think of my approach.
