That's because a normal Exclusive board has a built-in voltage regulator, which the Muenchen S does not have. 9 V are too much for it; many Risc-modules (also without regulator) have been accidentally roasted with that voltage. They were delivered with a special 5 Volt adaptor, the HGN5050.
I guess, 5,5 or max. 6 V could work...

I just checked my mains adaptor it spits out 5.68 Volts on the 5V setting. It still seems to need more Volts. The LCD is quite faint and the chirping sounds are a little weak compared to when using the adaptor module. It worked ok up until the fourth out of book move each time (two occasions). The first time the machine reset back to the starting position and Level 1, the second time the LEDs went crazy with lots of LEDs stuck "on" but very faint. It seemed to work best with just the MMIV and display modules. When using all three I didn't have much luck also when just using the MMIV it didn't want to work either.
While the Risc modules may fry at a little over 5V is there any chance MMIV/MMV are OK to 8 or 9V?
Also is there any chance faulty circuitry inside the Munchen board could cause this kind of problem? The ribbon type cable near the power jack seemed a little old and stiff when I opened it up to replace some reed switches...
