In der Partie Novag Sapphire II - Mephisto Montreux kam die Spanische Partie aufs Brett. Zunächst verlief die Partie ausgeglichen. Jedoch machte der Sapphire II mit 22. a3 einen Fehler (besser war 22. Lxc6), wonach Schwarz in Vorteil kam und schließlich gewann:
