Out of curiosity, I got mine out of its storage and I can just tell the New Game key only requires a light, gentle press, then the device emits three beeps (low-medium tone). Beware not to push too hard on it, it should not be required.
Maybe the neighbouring Referee key was somehow stuck down, preventing a correct scan of the row of keys?
