INTRO:
I obtained a Mephisto Academy without program module.
It's a lovely machine with good playing strenght and features,
so I had a few ideas in my mind:
1). Add an EPROM on the Academy motherboard to avoid need of an external module at all
2). Obtain a Mephisto College or HG170 module, and modify it to be used in my Academy
3). Make an automatic switch so I can change from the program inside the board and the external module
4). Use the mysterious "T+T" Turnier und Trainingsgerät-program in my Academy
THE GOOD:
1). I know that e.g. "Berger" has done this before, but I wanted to try my own way and document it
in a tutorial way with many pictures and colors.
The solution works perfectly and is cheap and easy to make and understand.
If there is interest I may try to document it on a web-page.
2). Done. I obtained one and even two College modules.
Fortunately I had a Super Mondial II to test them with.
One of the modules did not work - it displayed "COLLEGE" but was not functioning.
By comparing the two printed circuit boards I noticed that they were soldered differently.
The erroneous module looked completely untouched, so I conclude it was made wrong at factory.
This little issue is also documented for the interested.
3). I simply mounted a micro-switch triggered when inserting the external module, thereby easy changing
between the internal and the external program. Documented wityhn photos of course.
4). Burned EPROMs to the external module and run tests with all three language versions.
I even played a 10-game active (30 seconds/move) match against the MM III currently under work.
THE BAD:
Then I tried to play tournamnet games ay 40 moves / 2 hours.
All tried failed and the Academy T+T locked up and stopped responding after some moves.
I the tried the same in CB-Emu and then in MAME. The same result. T+T stoppoed working when out of the opening book!
If tournament level is used, TT crashes after first move out of book.
This happens in all three languages; NL, DE, EN.
- Start Mephisto Academy with the TT program.
Display shows:
"MEPHISTO T + T "
"by Ed SCHRöDER "
- Select Tournament level by pressing LEV + LEV
Display shows:
" - LEVEL MODE - "
"TOUR 40 in 2:00"
- Exit Level mode by pressing CL
Display shows:
" 40 02:00 00:00"
" 0 02:00 00:00"
- Execute a move that is NOT in the opening book, e.g. 1: Nb1-a3.
Lower LCD line starts counting: e.g.:
Display shows:
" 40 02:00 00:00"
" 1 01:56 03:01"
- The program has now already crashed!
ERRORS:
- White LED continues to be steady light on. (Black should start flashing).
- T+T never makes a move.
- Only INFO and CL buttons are working.
THE SOLUTION:
- Use the latest book binary of same language from the standard Academy program.
- DE: Rename "v-11ger" to "v-11" and "academy_16k_6.3.89" to "boek" and zip both to "academytt.zip"
- EN: Rename "v-11eng" to "v-11" and "academy_engl.16k" to "boek" and zip both to "academytt.zip"
- NL: Keep "v-11" and rename "academy_hollandisch_16k_4.10.88" to "boek" and zip both to "academytt.zip"

Now we can start testing and get some cELO even for the T+T.
