AW: New Millennium Chess Champion 2.0
Hi all,
Santa Klaus provided me with the nice, cute little box; so I share my first insights:
- it is indeed small (17.9mm squares, 0.7"), fits between me and my laptop which is rather convenient for using both, considering the lack of room on my desk.
- yet proportions are consistent, looks like a scaled down "normal" chess computer. Cute and still definitely read-able.
- overall design provides a taste of quality-made, confirmed once powered on by the modern and pleasant display.
- I don't much like the keyboard, perfectly use-able but the rubber keys don't provide a clear nor pleasant feeling.
- the push-sensitive chessboard is fine, reacts very well to soft pressure, either with your finger or the base of chessmen.
- as already pointed out by many of you, pieces would have gained advantage from more powerful magnets. Not that they would slip because of some light shaking, but grasping pieces with your fingers too easily push neighboring ones, they don't offer any resistance. You have to handle pieces with self-controled accuracy.
- I appreciate the power adapter port presence (it was a requirement from my point of view).
- Menus are straightforward enough, the set of options is basic yet good enough for simple, day to day use.
- I didn't understand so far the point with so-called basic levels. At quick glance, they look to play almost instantly up to level 7 out of 10, then around two to three secs for level 8, maybe 10 secs for level 9. I did not try level 10. The manual doesn't tell much about (they are supposed to target an average time, which one is not detailed). I assume they are also the ones used with Automatic level. I'll try later to dig a bit more into testing the average durations.
- The save & load feature is useful, e.g. for repeating test positions using various levels or styles. I suspect a bug with overwritting a previously used slot, yet erasing it beforehand solves the issue.
- The style setting does have an impact. According to early first tests, normal looks best, which was to be expected assuming correct tuning of the software. Very passive setting appears to much weaken the program, using 15secs/move level. To be confirmed, this is just a very early outcome.
That's all for now on,
MfG,
Tibono
