In my humble opinion, on a physical device the problem can disappear, because the chess computer is towards the bottom of our field of vision and at over 40 cm, our field of vision embraces the whole device (dimension of the Star Chess 190x110x30) and the position of the leds matters little, apart from the acquired habit of looking towards our color (generally closer to us).

On an emulation, the dimensions have changed, we are now at 60 cm, and we need to embracing a much wider field. In my case, I've set the emulator to full screen, i.e. 520x290, and my eyes can't detect the lit led without scanning the screen, especially as a lot of light is emitted by the whole screen and the led is small.

As for the rank LEDs on the right-hand side, it might be wise to place them on the same side as the function keys, rather than on the left, where in this case you have to look to the right to see if the computer has played, checked (or checkmated), then to the left to determine which piece is being played. For the same reason, when you check the position, the rank LEDs are next to the chess piece keys, which you have to press with precision and force (Star Chess has hard and small keys), thus avoiding having to look to the far left of the device.
