Wilson Winter Blitz 2005/06
In the cold winter with not much sports going on, I've decided to conduct a chess computer tournament. In the hope that it will be more useful to the Schachcomputer community, I decided the time control to be Game in 30 minutes so it should be a good fit for the Aktiv Liste. There are 8 computers playing a double round robin, for a total of 56 games. Unfortunately, the tourney is heavy on Mephisto/Novag models since the only Fidelity models I have are too far below the top entries in strength (Elite A/S & Excellence 3 MHz). I also wanted to stick to most of the entrants being already on the Aktiv Liste so the results might be more relevant.

Hallo! Round 2 of the tournament I give below in PGN. Thanks to Robert and Micha for the encouragement. By this weekend, I will post the PGN files and crosstable on the web, but I haven't found a good site for it yet.
In this round, the top 2 contenders faced off, Berlin Pro v. Atlanta, and they will meet one more time. The Berlin Pro built up a win by move 50, but then the short time control became a factor and it couldn't find the win, allowing a repetition. Berlin Pro. Wow! As Black, the Berlin Pro plays Richard Lang's favorite Latvian Gambit - and blows the Sapphire away, getting a resignation at move 24! My Mephisto Atlanta has not looked very strong so far, just hanging in their in the 1st 3 games. Its Round 3 game against the GK 2000, of similar blood, was not impressive at all. Meanwhile, the Star Diamond is off to a fantastic start, leading the tournament with 3 straight wins. Hello Chess Fans and Happy New Year!!! :D
Round 4 of 14 total is complete, and we now have a new leader. In a crucial head-to-head match, the Berlin Pro wrestled the lead from the Star Diamond in an Open Ruy. The Berlin Pro cracked open the SD's kingside in an interesting way but had to outplay the SD on all parts of the board before bringing home the win. The Polgar picked up its 1st win of the match against the GK 2000, and the Lyon played out a nice endgame in beating the Emerald. Rounding things out were the Atlanta and Sapphire, potential contenders who could only manage a draw. The Atlanta had a strong position I believe but never managed to convert it. Round 5 of the tournament is complete. In this round the Atlanta made a strong showing beating the Star Diamond (SD). This makes it a lot more difficult for the SD to win the tournament, but with 9 rounds left it is still quite possible. The Berlin Pro built on its lead by essaying another exciting Latvian. There were no draws in Round 5! :klatsch: And so far the percentage of draws if very low. I will follow quickly with Round 6, and a url for the pgn files and a full crosstable. Wilson Winter Blitz 2005 Round 6
The first stage of this double round robin tourney is nearing an end, with the 6th Round now having completed [of 14 total]. The Berlin Pro has now built up a solid lead. Wilson Winter Blitz Round 7 - Halfway Point
Round 7 is here and we are now at the halfway point in this double round robin tournament! Mephisto has a strong showing so far, holding places 1-3 in the standings. In Round 7 there was only one game decided, the other 3 being draws. The Star Diamond beat the GK 2000, backmarker of the tourney so far, and so moved a half-point closer to the leader, Mephisto Berlin Pro. The Emerald and Sapphire came out of book after 24 moves of a Ruy! This was quite a surprise, especially since the Emerald has only 8500 or so book moves, but that is how the game played. The second stage of this double round robin tournament is underway and we begin with a couple of shockers! To begin with, the Atlanta held up its own and defeated the Mephisto Lyon as Black (after drawing in their first game). The Novag Emerald was paired against the Star Diamond, and the Star Diamond wasted little time in taking the point there. But then were two of the more predictable games - the Sapphire, playing Black against the Mephisto Polgar, got blown off the board early! Holding on until move 48, the game was over after just 15 moves! The Polgar's performance here might be worthy of a best game prize.
Finally, came the last game. As Black the Mephisto Berlin Pro faced the GK 2000, pretty much an ideal start to the second stage for the Berlin Pro. Leading the tournament by one full point with 7 rounds to go, who would consider playing a Petrov against the last place entrant, 400 or so points weaker? Well, the Berlin Pro decided it was time for a Petrov. Another Latvian would have served much better. Every move that went by more pieces came off the board. The pawn structure remained balanced, and by move 41, both sides had 4 pawns only on the Queenside and a light Bishop. After 101 moves, the game came to an end by the 50-move rule: Draw! OK, the BP didn't lose, but it only drew the backmarker. Meanwhile, with the Atlanta and SD winning, the lead closed up a bit. In Round 9, the Atlanta and Berlin Pro will square off and the SD will face the upstart Polgar. After 8 rounds, no one is eliminated from 1st place yet, and the Atlanta and the Berlin Pro have yet to lose. Following up on the surprising Round 8 we have a few more in Round 9. The biggest one, and perhaps the biggest of all so far, is the Mephisto Polgar's victory over the Novag Star Diamond, with the Black pieces no less. The Berlin Pro also beat the Atlanta with the Black pieces, and this now gives the Berlin Pro a 2 point lead over the field. The Emerald beat the GK 2000 and this game, in combination with the Berlin Pro's win, eliminates the GK 2000 from winning the tournament. The Berlin Pro's victory over the Atlanta leaves the Berlin Pro as the only entrant yet to suffer a loss. Here's the standings and games:

75% of the games in Round 10 were decisive. The Atlanta made short work of the GK2000 but the big news is that the Berlin Pro finally lost! With the White pieces no less. The Star Diamond also beat the Lyon. Now all participants have lost at least one game. This closes the gap to the leader Berlin Pro; both the Star Diamond and the Atlanta now trail by 1 point with 4 rounds to go.

Today I bring news of the 11th round of the Wilson Winter 2005-6 Blitz tournament. With a game in 30 minutes time control, 3 of the 4 games were again decided. Interestingly, all wins went to the Black pieces. The Sapphire was the only White player to escape, with a draw against the Mephisto Atlanta. The Atlanta has the most draws so far. After some strong showings by the Mephisto Polgar over the last 3 rounds, it too went down to the GK2000. The Lyon overcame the Emerald but took 102 moves to do it. And finally, the Star Diamond again succumbed to the Berlin Pro. With 3 rounds to go, the Berlin Pro now has a sweet lead, 1.5 points on the Atlanta and 2 points on the SD. AW: Wilson Winter Blitz 2005/06 Round 12
As we near the close of this tournament, it is starting to look fairly bleak for the Novag entries. This round White scored 3.5 out of 4, and the Novag models all played Black. The Emerald was the only one to pull out a draw, meaning both the Sapphire and the Star Diamond lost, to the GK2000 and the Atlanta respectively. The Sapphire loss comes as a big surprise, having the only victory against the tournament leader and now also a loss to the last place holder in the tournament. The Berlin Pro decided to repeat moves against the Emerald after only 17 moves, perhaps showing a little human style to his game? :)
With only 2 rounds to go now, only the Berlin Pro, Atlanta, and Lyon have a chance to win the tournament. All are Mephisto models. In the next to the last round we again see 3 out of 4 games decided. The Berlin Pro seems to have gone into conservative mode and ended the game against the Polgar with a draw in 56 moves. The Atlanta turned in a sharp performance against the Emerald from the Black side of a Petrov, the Lyon beat the GK2000 and the Star Diamond managed to pull one out against the Sapphire in something of a seesaw battle. The Sapphire had several chances but never cashed in.
Now after 13 rounds and only one to go, we have this leader board: Berlin Pro 9.5 Atlanta 9.0 Lyon 8.0 Star Diamond 7.5 Only the Berlin Pro and the Atlanta remain with chances to win. The top Novag model, the Star Diamond can only come in 3rd at best. Hopefully Novag has something in the works to improve this situation.
