The 64-cup
Hello all,
from my computer chess collection, I most usually run swiss tournaments including a mix of chess computers and chess programs; selected in a range of relatively close ELOs. On another hand, it is a best practice to power up and use each and every chess computer now and then; so I decided few years ago to run a yearly cup competition dedicated to my chess computers. My first cup (2019) included 32 devices, later I used 48 chess computers, last year I entered 57 of them, and now I reached the nice number of 64 chess computers - so I am about to run this 64-cup! It should be a three months or so effort; but considering I am now retired I plan to store and share the games (which I did not, previously). Strong chess computers can face weak ones in such a cup, this can be unusually fun to watch :) How do I proceed: - 8 groups are created with 8 competitors each; of which one is selected amongst the eight strongest chess computers ("top seed"); and seven from the rest of my collection are randomly assigned to this group. Code:
Top seed for group 1 is the DGT Centaur - Then I run short swiss tournaments, one for each group. Three rounds are usually enough to rank 8 competitors (eventually using Sonneborn/Berger score). Each competitor plays once with the light pieces, once with the dark ones, thus two games per round. All the cup competition is played using 15secs/move level (or closest level). - This selection phase provides 2+1 chess computers that will keep on fighting, and 5 that are eliminated. The first and second ranks will play for the cup, while the third one will play for a consolation prize. - 1/8th final for the cup (featuring 16 chess computers) will cross-face for elimination 1st from a group and 2nd from another group (1st of group 1 plays 2nd of group 8; 2nd of group 2 plays 1st of group 7, 1st of group 3 plays 2nd of group 6, and so on...). - next phases for the cup are classical quarter-final, semifinal, and final plus a secondary/small final for third place. - the consolation prize for the third ranked computers from the selection phase is played in cup mode, starting at quarter-final step (featuring 8 chess computers). Obviously the DGT Centaur (expert mode) is expected to win the cup; nevertheless this should not prevent some interesting games to happen. Which chess computer will challenge it as a finalist, and what about the third place? Forecasts for the first three horses are welcome... MfG, Tibono |

Thank you Tibono.
I will follow this with great interest. Good luck Murat |

Groups are now designed. Let's start with group 1, contenders are:
- DGT Centaur - Mephisto Mirage - Conchess Escorter - Novag Beluga - Mephisto Mein erster - Systema Challenge - Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 8 - Novag Citrine Round 1 matches will follow the above randomly created order; thus first two games will match DGT Centaur with Mephisto Mirage. The Centaur lets no chance to the Mirage; each weak move is merciless punished, and both below games are shortly completed (21 then 24 moves). Funny enough, both are French games. As the Mirage as black chose this opening and lost the first game, I suspect the Centaur wanted to instruct him how to win using the very same opening

I guess the Centaur in Expert Mode is too strong in Expert Mode. Even the King would not been able to beat a Stockfish 8.

Hello !
DGT Centaur in Expert Mode 2919 ?, not even the world Champion could beat him, an opponent with 1544 hm, for me a senseless match sorry. Best Regards |

Second match for group 1, round 1, is Novag Beluga vs Conchess Escorter (basic module).
According to my Elo scale, the odds were 2/3 to 1/3 in favor of the Beluga. Well, the actual score being 1.5 to 0.5 can be considered well done from the Conchess; but zooming into both games is a bit more deceptive. The Conchess played rather well as white until late middlegame, reaching a rather balanced position after exchanges, where both computers had equal material: 1 Queen, 1 Rook, 1 minor piece and 6 pawns :box2:. This was already an achievement with regards to its weaker Elo; but later the Conchess was 2 Pawns down and failed to provide support to its own center Pawns that could have put some pressure on the Beluga. The Beluga did not shine then, using around 30 moves to slowly convert the game into a win . On the second game as black, the Conchess manages to get a piece ahead thanks to a blunder move from the Beluga (on move 15), but lets a position repetition later happen. The Beluga can be thankful for that! :schwitzer:

The Vonset L6 v2 had the potential to give Centaur expert a good challenge. But its software designers are very inexperienced.
All levels form 1-22 play in less then a second. They claim it is working as intended. I say they have no clue. Too bad. Murat |

Third match in group 1, round 1, is Mephisto Mein Erster against Systema Challenge (using my "Tibono setting" intended to provide a slightly more dynamic play, whilst staying close to the original style: F1=9, F3=12, F4=F5=8, F6=11, F7=9).
The humble "Zen" 4K program from Eric van Riet Paap has of course no chance against Horvath's 32K running on a much faster H8. The first game is sort of a miniature with only 16 moves, as the Mein Erster blunders very early. On another hand, the Challenge provides evidence it can be very passive: without errors from its opponent :respekt:, despite playing as white (and despite my setting :o), it lets the slow, closed game, reach 30 moves before daring to open the position on the Queen side. Under pressure, the Mein Erster fails to provide sufficient King safety and quickly loses to a corridor mate.

Round 1 for group 1 is now completed. Last match was Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 8 vs Novag Citrine, another very unbalanced match with a +700 CElo gap.
Sensory 8 with white pieces lets two black minor pieces prowl close to its uncastled King; when the black Queen joins the kill, it is soon all over... ... and playing Black, it already commits two errors within the first ten moves, the game is soon hopeless...

Mephisto Mein erster and Mephisto Mirage start the round 2 for group 1. Would the small Mein erster manage to get a draw? Sorry no, the Mirage rules and scores 2 points.
Mein erster playing white blunders as soon as the tenth move, unaware of a forking threat by the Mirage's Knight. It really is blind to such forks, at least when playing at this pace (default level h3=15 seconds/move). The Mirage plays rather methodically then, towards the win, just a matter of technique. On the return game, a nice performance from the Mein erster: ahead with dark pieces, as far as material is concerned, up to move 29: a Knight for two Pawns. It then lets the Mirage get initiative, penetrate the position with a Rook and remove a couple of exposed Mein erster's Pawns. The Mirage's own Pawns get much stronger than the Mein erster's Knight, marching for queening.

Conchess Escorter now faces Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 8. From their relative strength standpoint, Sensory 8 should be able to get half a point from this match.
This did not happen. First game is a lengthy one, 81 moves. The Conchess gets the lead once reaching early middlegame, but gives back this advantage in late middlegame, thru a - non that obvious - tactical error. The Conchess builds again an advantage, slowly overwhelming the Sensory 8 in the endgame phase. In the next game, Sensory 8 plays white, and takes a lead in the 20th to 30th moves. This is all messed up after a couple of positional errors; and the Escorter prevails. 2 points for the Conchess.

Hi all,
third match, round 2 of group 1: how will the mighty Centaur spank :maul:the Beluga, proud of its 1.5 score so far? 1st game, Beluga playing as black commits a small positional error, merciless exploited by the Centaur. In the second (short!) game, the Beluga wrongly opened the position on Queen side while its King wasn't castled; the Centaur achieves a strong attack completed with a nice move the Beluga didn't expect: it resigned on the fly .

First surprise happened in the fourth match, round 2 of group 1: Novag Citrine and Systema Challenge shared a point each, they both won as white! This is despite the 200 CElo (or so) gap in favor of the Citrine...
It is well known they are both on the passive side of the playing style, therefore the games were lengthy ones (80 moves on average). The first game with Citrine as white player is rather balanced until move 50, where the Challenge commits the error that will turn the game to the Citrine's advantage. The second game with the Systema Challenge (playing as white) is nicely balanced until move 20, even with a slight positional lead by the Challenge who has a stronger hand on the center of the board, to my opinion. On move 21, the Citrine commits an inaccuracy (not sure this can be evaluated as an error, I spent some time analyzing :gruebel: before understanding the issue with the Citrine's move, and what alternate better moves to play). The Challenge did spot the correct next move, and slowly but safely won. The Citrine stubbornly never resigned :wall: (sometimes it does...)

Hi,
now starts the third round for group 1, with the two weakest devices: Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 8 and Mephisto Mein erster. With 16 CElo difference in my ranking list, the match should be balanced. The first game is indeed balanced during 55 moves, without blatant errors from any of the computers: well done from both! :top: Then, in a difficult endgame for those small 4K programs (the Mephisto features a 8K ROM, but half part for the Zen program and half for training exercises), a wrong move from the Sensory 8 (white) provides an additional passed pawn to the Mein erster, which fails to convert the game to a win. The second game is pure domination by the Mein erster as white. The Sensory 8 played ugly chess in the opening, moving its Queen during 6 out of its 10 first moves! Needless to say, it was under-developped :( ... But that was not enough, it also lost a Knight after moving it to a fork-vulnerable square:bigeyes:. Later in the game, the Sensory 8 blunders and loses a Rook, in addition to the Knight  . The endgame should have been a piece of cake for the Mein erster, overwhelming the Sensory 8 with a Queen, a Rook and two Pawns against a single opponent Pawn to support the King. It's a pity it lacks sufficient algorithms to handle such an easy mate process and prevent repetitions :heulsuse:. So the match was rather unbalanced, but the score ended balanced as expected: one point each after two draws.

Tag Udo,

Hi guys,
here occurs an outcome that was to be expected: Novag Beluga gets 1.5 points from its fight with Mephisto Mirage. First game is balanced, without significant errors from both, and ends as a draw with an agreed repetition of positions . Second game is as well balanced for a while, then the Mirage playing dark pieces blunders on move 19 :dead:. The Beluga mates only five moves later.

Hello,
the Systema Challenge gets 2 points out of facing the Conchess Escorter. Not a surprise, considering the roughly 380 CElo gap. Actually, despite not blundering, the Escorter never puts a firm foot on the ground, apart from the ten or so first moves: always on the slightly worse side of the balance, and things going worse along time. |

Hi,
the last match for the group 1 is DGT Centaur vs Novag Citrine. With 900 CElo points difference, odds in favor of the Citrine were marginal, if any. Well, according to theory, the Citrine could get a point out of 200 games (I would suspect two draws rather than a win) :headpat:. Nothing such happened :vampir:. In the first game, playing black, the Citrine didn't come down in my Kibitzer estimation, but couldn't do much. Game over in 43 moves, despite the 1.a4 bold opening chosen by the Centaur. Second game, Citrine plays with light pieces; despite material balance the situation shifts more clearly in favor of the Centaur after an error from the Citrine on move 26. The Citrine resigned after 47 moves (I knew it was able to!).

AW: The 64-cup
Good afternoon to all;
first match in group 2, round 1 is Novag Chess Champion Delta-1 vs Scisys Chess Companion III. With 600 CElo discrepancy as an order of magnitude, the two points gained by the CCIII are far from being any surprise. I shall refrain from writing much comments :tapedshut, otherwise my question mark key would get worn out by too much hits, and you would get bored. In the first game, a funny white King journey occurs for the Delta-1, reaching 6th row before going back to its initial position on e1 square, just to get mated. In the second game, the Delta-1 as black stubbornly pushes its Pawns, to such an extent that only on move 14 does it move a piece. It is of course so under-developped that it is a piece of cake :yummy: for the Chess Companion III.
