AW: The 64-cup
Hello, good afternoon to all,
7th match in this 1/8th final is an easy one for the Mephisto Berlin, facing the venerable, 10+ years older, Fidelity Champion Sensory Chess Challenger: two wins in a row. None of these games reach 40 moves. Nevertheless, respect for the Champion Sensory, which found its way to the 1/8th final, amongst sixteen out of sixty four chess computers. Kudos! :respekt:

Good morning,
last match from 1/8th final is Yeno 532XL against Millenium Chess Genius Pro (the 2016 elder). With 460+ CElo leap, odds are roughly 14/1 in favor of the CGP. In the first game, despite playing as Black, it is on the attacking side: constantly pushing back the Rathman's program, compelled to play within its own half-board. During the second game, the Yeno resists fourty moves or so before collapsing and leaving the competition.

Good afternoon,
Quarter-final starts with the match DGT Centaur vs Mephisto Chess Challenger 10Mhz. A good first game as Black for the Saitek/Mephisto Morsch, it can sustain a balanced game for 30 moves or so. Then, all the Centaur pieces are dedicated to attacking whilst all the Chess Challenger ones are committed to defend. Of course, based on such an Elo difference, this could not last long and the Centaur prevails. The second game is rather a miniature one, as the Chess Challenger blunders on move #11 - I myself immediately felt the high danger it put itself into. Lack of depth search? I would rather say a lack of skills... It deservedly quits the competition.

Good night all,
the Chinese bomber L6 v2 teaches the CT800 what chess is all about :p 60 moves are enough to crush it twice!! In the first game playing White, the L6-v2 shows how to dominate the center, gain space, open lines and coordinate attacking pieces, all aimed at the ennemy King's corner. A real show of force! I knew it plays very strong chess, but up to spank the CT800 in such a way, I didn't guess it. Much impressive! The second game starts balanced for the CT800 now playing as White, on par for roughly 20 to 25 moves. Then the L6 plays a Pawn move that looks rather minor but actually enables a thundering threat onto the poor CT800 King, unsufficiently sheltered. The CT800 fails to immediately provide additional support, and collapses. :dead: A couple of facts to be reminded, about the L6-v2: - it is a dedicated chess computer, not to be confused with some boards requiring a remote engine on a powerful smartphone or PC; - each and every move is played instantly

Re: The 64-cup
Vonset L6 v2 all 32 levels are instant play. Not even 1 second thinking. Imagine what that machine can do if it had normal time controls.
I am guessing they have at least 3 engines running. Engine 1 for levels 1 to 10 - ply limited accordingly Engine 2 for levels 11 to 20 - ply limited accordingly Engine 3 for levels 21 to 31 - ply limited accordingly Strongest engine for Level 32 with unlocked ply This is my theory. I can't see any other way to have increasing strength curve from L1 to L32 and instant play all the time. |

Hello, good morning to all,
last match from quarter-final phase is a Lang family affair: smart vs fast, Mephisto Berlin vs Millenium Chess Genius Pro. In the first game as White, the Berlin can only play two moves out of its openings library before being forced to computing by the CGP (for information, I let the default setting, thus book 2 which is the big modern "HIARCS" book). Surprisingly enough, I was able to instantly spot a positional mistake from the Berlin, on move #39. I am not used to positional mistakes performed by this Lang program (a Vancouver in disguise), and further more not used to be able to see these by myself. Maybe I am not so bad at chess? :raffnix: ok, dream off :ignore:. Anyway, the rest of the game provides later evidence this positional error was a bad mistake: the involved Knight won't anymore be any useful to the Berlin, compelled to resignation. The revenge game is balanced, with a center kept closed for a while; once some pieces exchanges are performed the position is slightly in favor of the CGP. Thus, the Berlin plays for a draw and achieves a 3-fold repetition. The outcome is 1.5 to 0.5 in favor of the fast Chess Genius Pro.

Hi,
as the quarter-final phase is now completed, here are the semifinal matches to be soon played: Code:
DGT Centaur (2919) MfG, Tibono |
AW: The 64-cup
Good evening to all,
In the first semifinal match, the first two games are a near miss for the Centaur: the L6-v2 has been very close to an unexpected win! :vampir: As I am fully overwhelmed with the chess playing level, I shall provide insights from an engine analysis (Deep HIARCS 15.2, 4 threads, 5 secs/move). After fifteen moves in the first game, despite playing as Black, the L6 already has an edge; and on move #16 the Centaur commits a mistake, soon followed by another one on move #17 with still an inaccuracy to come next move. That's more than enough for the L6 to dominate the rest of the game, and score one point. Next game, the Centaur plays strongly as Black and gets an edge, but a small mistake on move #39 lets the game return to a balanced situation. There is a smell of a draw game for close to 40 additional moves; the Centaur has no more control onto the outcome of this match: a draw would have meant a 1.5 to 0.5 victory for the L6!! Of course I let both devices play to the bitter end; and bitter it will be: the L6 blunders, no half-decent human player would have committed such an obviously losing move! One point each, so we are to play at least two more games; in the first one as White the Centaur plays very strong chess whilst the L6 commits a bunch of mistakes and never stands a foot on the ground. The fourth and last game is slightly less strong from the Centaur playing with the dark pieces; but strong enough to achieve the final win, and 3 to 1 score. Therefore, the Centaur is happy (and somewhat lucky) to reach the final "boss" level.

AW: The 64-cup
Hello,
second half of the semifinal features two Millenium devices, The King Performance and the Chess Genius Pro (first generation). A word about books settings: with the new generation CGP arrival, several test games were played in this forum; and from the discussions it appeared as a consensus the classic (London) book fits better this device, assuming playing strength is expected more than variety. Well, I shall not turn a deaf ear to this argument; I used the modern HIARCS book so far in this 64-cup, but for the serious games to come I'll switch to book 1 setting (classic, London book). By the way, the setting for The King Performance in this cup is/was/will stay as Aegon'94 as first book, plus Master as secondary one; thus with both priority to classical openings and ability to answer correctly modern ones, should the opponent play these. And yes, ECO mode is off for the CGP (means pondering is on). In the first game, CGP playing Black side commits a (small) mistake on move #8, that's enough for the KP to rule the rest of the game and score a first point as White. In the second game, the KP playing with the dark pieces has an edge over the CGP during around 60 moves, then the edge vanishes and the 100+ moves game finally ends in a long expected draw. Well done from the CGP, but of course not sufficient to reach the final.

Good evening,
now we reach the trophies phase; starting with the secondary final that should grant the bronze cup to the third place. Contenders are Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 and Millenium Chess Genius Pro. L6 plays first, and is definitely on fire! :maul: It simply teaches the CGP how strong storming Pawns can be!! As soon as opposite castlings happens, it launchs its King'side Pawns forward and sounds the charge. At move #18, all CGP pieces huddle together on the Queen'side, whilst the L6 threat on King'side is patent, not only due to the advancing Pawns but as well due to the several pieces able to threaten the CGP King shelter. According to HIARCS analysis, the L6 moves are very accurate, and the CGP quickly loses. The second game with CGP now playing as White lasts somewhat longer; nevertheless the L6 quickly cancels White's advantage and gets an edge. Again it plays much accurately, reaches the endgame two Pawns up, then soon a third Pawn up, and game soon over for the CGP. Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 wins 2-0 and is granted the bronze cup! :eclipseeb

good evening,
now time's up for the final match! It is of course DGT Centaur vs Millenium The King Performance. Theoretical odds are about 10 to 1 in favor of the Centaur... and indeed the King Performance can't do much, and loses. It plays rather solid chess in both games, offering constant resistance, nevertheless slowly but surely losing some ground along with the accurate moves of the Centaur. I can't spot any brilliant attack: just cold, patient and safe Centaur moves, "à la Lang"...

Good morning,
the Consolation tournament :headpat: has already been designed, step by step, including the chess computers that, time ago, reached third place of each selection group. But after the climax of previous semifinal and final games, maybe worth reminding who the contenders are (grouped by match to play): :box2: Code:
Novag Beluga (1701) MfG, Tibono |
AW: The 64-cup
Hi, good evening,
here is the first match of the Consolation cup, direct quarter-final stage: Novag Beluga vs Mephisto Rebell 5. It has been a tight match, as no less than three rounds, thus six games, were required to name a winner. Both two first games were draw ones by referee assesment. In the first game, Rebell 5 as Black player is up a Pawn in the late endgame, but its Pawn is on the a-file with the Beluga's King on its path. Other pieces are a Bishop for the Beluga and a Knight for the Rebell. Should the Rebell's Pawn threaten a promotion, the Bishop would be sacrificed, and the game would end in a draw due to unsufficient material. No way for a win... In the second game, Rebell 5 playing White reaches a winning endgame position, leveraging a nice chain of three advanced Pawns. But the position is closed, and the plan to unlock the win is way out of reach from the Rebell :nene:. Therefore, only pieces shuffling happens until referee decision for a drawn game. Third game, Rebell Black commits an early mistake on move #10, and the smart Beluga finds the strong counter-move :idee!!!: . The Rebell will never recover: the Beluga plays accurate enough to home the first win. Fourth game, with White pieces Rebell is committed for a win, otherwise leave the consolation cup. Maybe motivation rules, as it dominates the whole game and scores the required point to stay alive. Fifth game could have been close to a win for the Beluga playing as White, yet it doesn't spot the winning move and, being a Pawn down, choses to repeat position. It is now vulnerable to a potential win from the Rebell 5, that will play as White next game... And Rebell 5 shows a good finish, never letting the Beluga playing Black really stand a safe foot on the ground, thanks to both a better structure of Pawns and more active long range guns (pair of Bishops and Rooks). Match score is therefore 3.5 to 2.5 in favor of the Rebell 5.

AW: The 64-cup
Good evening,
next match is Saitek Turbo King II vs Tiger Grenadier. In the first game, the Grenadier with Black pieces gets a strong lead after 30 moves or so, thanks to a mighty attack on the d file, with three big guns aligned (Queen plus two Rooks). Then the Turbo King restores an equal score, also playing as Black, but I must admit this game has been very deceptive from the Kaplan program, unable to decently wrap-up a much simple endgame: advanced Pawn+King vs King. The Pawn is out of reach from the Grenadier, but instead of pushing it to promotion, the Turbo King shuffles its own King aimlessly :vogel: . Only under the threat of a position repetition will it condescend to move the Pawn a step forward: very frustrating :wall: . I noticed the winning score it displayed (using the info function) was better with the Pawn still to be promoted, than after the actual promotion. This is an explanation, not an excuse for an obvious flaw. At last the point is scored, triggering another couple of games. Third game the Turbo King plays White and rules all game long, the Grenadier suffuring from an initial lack of development, then from a bad Pawns structure. Nice and clear win this time, from the Kaplan program. Fourth game is kept uncertain for 50 moves or so, then the Turbo King plays smartly in the endgame, and prevails. Overall score is 3 to 1 for the Turbo King; the Grenadier leaves the competition for good.

AW: The 64-cup
Good evening to all,
next match is Mephisto Maestro Travel (the small handheld) vs CXG Super Enterprise. Theoretical odds are 1/3 to 2/3, in favor of the K. Danielsen 16K program (recently emulated, a big thank to all contributors :top: - but here I use my physical device). In the first game as Black, once out of book, the CXG gets a clear edge during fifteen moves or so before commiting a small mistake that enabled a potential drawn game for the Maestro Travel. The Maestro then follows a path to a draw for half a dozen moves but fails on ist turn, letting the Super Enterprise score the first point. The second game is easier and shorter for the CXG playing White; on move #15 the Maestro Travel goes a wrong way letting the CXG dominate, yet only with a small advance. The CXG ends the match thru 3-fold repetition, with 1.5 to 0.5 points.

Good morning,
to complete the quarter-final matches, the unexpected weakest participant in the Consolation tournament now has to face the strongest: Mephisto II vs Fidelity Designer Mach III. AW: The 64-cup
Good afternoon,
semifinal of the consolation cup starts with Mephisto Rebell 5 vs Saitek Turbo King II. In the first game as White, the Rebell 5 gets its Queen out a bit early and unprudently, and fails to secure an exit path for it. The Queen will escape the Turbo King attack, but at the cost of a Knight for a Pawn. The game lasts but the Rebell can't recover, 0-1 for the Turbo King. The next game is rather surprising: the Turbo King sets a trap from its openings library; the Rebell was already out of its book since several moves and can't resist the poisoned offer. The line is included in the Turbo King's book with still three moves available. Yet, the overall gain from this combination is only one point from a material standpoint, thus the Rebell keeps good chances, and later applies pressure leveraging a passed Pawn, and prevails. Score is now 1-1, both wins as Black player. Here we go for two additional games, and again the Turbo King manages to win as Black, thanks to better handling of Pawns. In the final game as White, it also manages to get threatening passed Pawns, and wins. Final score: 3-1 for the Kaplan/Barnes program, and an invitation card for the final match.

AW: The 64-cup
Good morning all, wish you a happy weekend! ;)
Second semifinal match is CXG Super Enterprise vs Fidelity Designer Mach III Master 2265. Theoretical odds are 89 % in favor of the Spracklen program, leveraging a rather fast 68000 16-biter at 16Mhz, versus a rather modest 6301Y running at 2Mhz. The first game with the Danielsen's 16K program playing as White turns into a one-way fight starting from move #24, when the Super Entreprise badly neglects its own King safety. The revenge game is surprisingly a draw , both devices agreeing a 3-fold position repetition as soon as move #19. Maybe the Mach III was aware a draw was enough to enter the final? Well, we all know it cannot be so, therefore it is a bit deceptive from the Designer Mach III. On another hand, it is an achievement from the Super Enterprise: it will gain some CElo points in my private ranking... :top:

AW: The 64-cup
Good morning,
Now the Consolation cup final match is ready to be played: Saitek Turbo King II vs Fidelity Designer Mach III Master 2265. Theoretical odds are 71 to 29 in favor of the Spracklen program. To my opinion, the first game with the Designer Mach III playing the dark side is the "game of the cup"! What an attacker the Mach III can be! It gets out of the opening phase with the Bishops pair, whilst the Turbo King will play with a pair of Knights. Moreover, check the position after move #22: all Mach III long range guns (Queen, both Rooks and both Bishops) are firing at White's position! The Turbo King curls up for defense, but cannot stand such a wild pressure for long. The final mate sequence is worth seeing: the Designer Mach III sacrifices its two Bishops in a row, to get the ennemy King stark naked in the middle of nowhere! The revenge game is not that enthusiasming. It has been globally balanced, with a long boring endgame with one Pawn advantage for the Turbo King. I forced myself to keep on the game playing; according to my analysis engine there were some opportunities for the Turbo King to break through, but both devices were unable to spot these, and the game ends in a deserved draw. 1.5 to 0.5 is therefore the final score, close to the theoretically expected one.
