Re: The 64-cup
Guten Morgen Alle,
the last match from group 3 swiss tournament is complete. It sets the mighty Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 against the strong Saitek Turbo King II. :box2: Well, I wouldn't have thought I would ever see the Turbo King receive such a spank from another chess computer. That was the first game, it was the Black player. The L6 playing White pieces puts such a pressure onto the opponent King corner, the Turbo King never could grasp a breathing. :dead: The only weakness the Vonset let appear, during this first game and still more in the second one, is an inclination to procrastinate the win. Instead of going for the kill in a straightforward manner, it manages to increase its material advantage and bothers to defend not anymore useful chessmen.

Hi,
as a consequence, here is the group 3 crosstable: Code:
1. Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 (lv 22) 6 points Let me introduce group 4; where the Millenium Chess Genius Pro will fight as the seeded player: - Mephisto Milano v2.00 - Mephisto I-X - VEB RFT Chess-Master Diamond + PM11 - Mephisto Europa A - Millenium Chess Genius Pro - Tiger Grenadier - Novag Carnelian II - Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor The Chess-Master Diamond is the weakest in this group, but I hope for an interesting match with the I-X "brikett". They should theoretically meet in round 2. MfG, Tibono |
Re: The 64-cup
Hi, good evening,
group 4 round 1 starts with the match Mephisto Milano v2.00 (Nigel Short program inside) against Mephisto 1X. The 1X plays fairly well in both games, but only for twenty moves or so; which is already a nice achievement. Then things inexorably go wrong: two points for the Schröder 8-biter.

Re: The 64-cup
Good morning all,
Now the large wooden Chess-Master Diamond with PM11 module bravely meets the small, nevertheless strong, Mephisto Europa A. As I don't own the opening module (PM10), for variety sake I shall let the CMD play without 'best' mode for its very first moves (6 as White, 5 as Black); then I shall restore the 'best' selection for the rest of the game. With close to 400 CElo points margin, the Morsch program should easily prevail. This did not happen in the first game, a long and boring one you can exempt yourself from watching: the middlegame is kept closed for about fifteen moves where pieces go back and forth with high odds for a draw per repetition. The Europa A program has nothing to prevent that, it would have been a nice achievement from the CMD to get half a point from this match. Unfortunately, it is happy with a slightly positive score, and denies the draw twice. Once the game opens, the Europa A sets a strong pressure onto the White king corner, the Diamond commits a positional error weakening a key square, and due to the famous horizon effect commits a tactical mistake in addition. Game over. The second game is much shorter, with a Diamond blunder  as soon as the eighth move. A piece of cake for the Europa A.

Re: The 64-cup
Hello, wish you all a nice afternoon,
If one of the matches the seeded player will have to play can provide an unexpected result, it definitely is the one with the Tiger Grenadier, which can play odd chess :verrückt: and achieve either the best or the worst. In the first game as Black, it is a bit unwise, sending a Knight deep into the Chess Genius Pro position; four moves later the bold Knight is lost, just able to remove an ennemi Pawn, to avoid dying alone. The meticulous Lang program needed nothing more to ensure the win. The second game: Grenadier now plays White and resists 25 moves or so, before (again!) wrongly moving a Knight, outside the area it was needed in for defense sake. Two points for the Chess Genius Pro.

Guten Abend Alle,
let's step forward with next match, a balanced one: Novag Carnelian II vs Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor. According to my private CElo ranking, over 100 games, the Carnelian II is expected to win 57 points and the Maestro should score the rest, therefore 43 points. Very close, isn't it? Well, the expectation is fulfilled: 1 point each from this match, a slightly deceptive result as it is the outcome of two draws after rather shy chess played by both. Both chess computers play pretty restrained and miss several opportunities for more interesting fights.

Re: The 64-cup
Hi,
round 2 for group 4 starts with VEB RFT Chess-Master Diamond + PM11 versus Hegener & Glaser Mephisto I-X. Again a balanced match, in the same area as the previous one, as far as probabilities are concerned: theoretically 56 points out of 100 in favor of the brikett. The first game with Diamond playing White is thoroughly balanced from a material standpoint; the Diamond offered twice a nice opportunity for the 1X which failed to spot it. The game ends in a draw. I am happy with the second game, where the Chess-Master achieves a win: it is such a nice device! Of course, both computers miss some opportunities across the whole game, but the Diamond finds the killer move 27 ... Bxf3! and the 1X will never recover from that :dead:. At some point it could have drawn per repetition, but failed to play it.

Re: The 64-cup
Hi,
as the Tiger Grenadier scored zero points after meeting the Chess Genius Pro, it now has more than a chance to come back, facing the modest Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor. As I use specific settings for the Grenadier evaluation, maybe worth mentioning these: Shield (King safety) raised from 20 to 25%, and Eval Pawn from 0 to 2%. Of course they should not much influence the result of this unbalanced match; nevertheless the Stadlbauer Maestro has been a rather fine trainer as it did not commit blatant blunders; just being slowly overwhelmed. Both games in 49 moves; funny isn't it?

Re: The 64-cup
Hello,
now the Mephisto Milano v2.00 (a standard Milano equipped with a Nigel Short ROM) meets the Novag Carnelian II. Odds are over 96% in favor of the Schröder program... In the first game, the Carnelian II playing with the dark pieces loses too much material far too early, starting with move 12. Then the game just looks like a mouse trapped under the paws of a big cat. :yummy: Playing with the light pieces in the second game, the Carnelian II fares much better, pretty on par with the Milano v2 during 25 moves or so. It then tries to gain some material, capturing a supported Pawn with its Bishop, simultaneously unveiling a threat on the ennemy Bishop. :idee!!!: Unfortunately, the threatened Bishop can escape with tempo... Wrong calculation, little Carnelian...

Re: The 64-cup
Hi,
last match for round 2 faces the Millenium Chess Genius Pro and the Mephisto Europa A. With roughly 600 CElo more, the CGP has nothing to worry about. The first game is just a steady glide down for the Morsch program; while a clear error during the second one throws it down as soon as move 19.
