AW: The 64-cup
Hi,
this round is unfavorable to both Mephisto/Saitek Chess Challengers: after the lost point by the 32 Mhz tuned one, the standard 10 Mhz gives half a point away to the Blitz. The first game with the Saitek Blitz playing as White is not much disputed, both computers exchanging minor pieces on each and every opportunity, reaching one Queen plus two Rooks each in the endgame; and soon agreeing to a draw per repetition. In the second game, the Chess Challenger rules from the beginning to the end, achieving a better Pawns position and leveraging an ennemy King too much exposed to my taste.

Good evening to all,
Next games renewed my appetite for playing with the Conic . I could manage more efficiently the input of moves, and facing the Boris Diplomat the plug-in device achieved rather good games, in the way of making correct use of the mistakes committed by the Boris. In the first game Boris Diplomat plays White and stupidly aligns its King behind its Queen on a semi-opened file already under the fire of an ennemy Rook. Fatal error for sure, but the Conic Chess Computer uses it quite efficiently. In the second game, Boris plays Black and again don't care enough about King safety, uncastled with big guns in front of him. This couldn't last long, thus two points for the Conic!

Hello,
third round for group 7 continues with the match H&G Mephisto II / Fidelity Electronics Chess Challenger 10. The first game is rather long, close to 50 moves, due to a game staying closed for long, but also because the Mephisto II (playing as White) has been a bit shy before opening it. Main reason to my opinion for the loss by the CC10 is the fact it got one of its Rooks stuck behind its King; therefore the brikett could play a Rook up for a while. When the CC10 got its Rook free, it was just too late: it was already three Pawns down and couldn't survive. The next game with the Chess Challenger playing as White is balanced until late middlegame, where both devices lack any plan and shuffle pieces aimlessly . The CC10 then commits a blunder losing a Rook, and collapses. That's all the brikett needed to score two points as expected from this match! :D

Good evening,
as already stated, the Saitek/Mephisto Chess Challenger 32 Mhz is the seeded player within this 7th group; nevertheless unsure so far to enter the final cup because of its loss of a point against the Excellence during the previous round. But now, after two wins in a row facing the Saitek "Kasparov" Blitz, its appearance in the next step of the competition is secured. :) Playing as White in the first clash, it dominates all game long and reaches the endgame with a three Pawns advantage, which the Blitz of course cannot stand. Playing as Black in the second game, the domination occurs slightly later but as well inexorably.

Hi, good afternoon to all,
the first match is a high level one, facing the seeded player Fidelity Designer Mach III Master 2265 with the second strongest in the 8th group: the Saitek GK 2000. From the hardware point of view, the Fidelity leverages a 68000 CPU running at 16 Mhz, roughly 50% faster than the H8 at 10 Mhz of the Saitek. From the software standpoint, 64Kb ROM for the Fidelity, that's four times larger than the 16Kb Saitek. Nevertheless, both devices are close as far as the playing strength is concerned. And that's a great achievement from the Morsch's program, I consider it the strongest 16K program powering a chess computer (and would be happy to read about any opinion about). This materialized in this match, as both devices won as White, with little chances left for the opponent.

Good morning to everyone,
second match in first round for group 8 is Yeno 301XL vs Tandy Chess Champion 2150. For your information, the CC2150 runs the version "B" of the Kaplan/Barnes program on a 3 Mhz 65C02. It is not a great attacker, which partly explains the resistance offered in both games by the Yeno. The other part of the explanation is related to the 301XL itself: to my opinion an interesting small program, able to resist consistently. But of course 380 CElo points handicap can't be overcome, and the CC2150 earns two points from this match.

Hi, good evening,
round 1 is now completed with the fourth match, Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 6 vs Lexibook Chesslight. The level I use for the Chesslight is C8, this stands for 10 to 15 secs with aggressive style. The reason why is I wanted to clearly differentiate its play from the Yeno 320XT one, as both are using the same Kaare Danielsen 4K program. The first game is dominated by the Chesslight playing as Black, but the second game could have been won by the Sensory 6 that failed to convert a domination period into a win; and the Chesslight is happy with a 3-times repetition.

Hey, I'm back...
round 2 for group 8 starts with the match Applied Concept Boris vs Yeno 301XL. The first game (Boris plays White) is short, a straightforward and easy victory for the Yeno. Fun fact: the Yeno starts the game playing seven (7!) Knight moves in a row. Not an issue though, as Boris developped its position in a bad way... The next game is another story, a bit deceptive from the 301XL: despite capturing an ennemy Knight as early as move number six, it will have to play 67 moves to achieve the mate. Worth mentioning, its white squares Bishop is more than a bad Bishop: a pityful one, that will end captured...

Hello, good afternoon all,
the Lexibook Chesslight somehow shares the unfortunate fate of the Sensory 6: as it earned 1.5 points in the first round, it has now the "privilege" to meet the seeded player, Fidelity Designer Mach III Master 2265. What did you expect? Two points granted to the Mach III, of course. In the first game, the Lexibook as White could not resist longer than move #6 before starting loosing ground. The second game was even shorter, even if the position was still approximately balanced until move #10.

Hi,
next match is an interesting one: Novag Super Nova vs Tandy 2150. With 72 CElo points in favor of the Novag, odds are 60/40 for the Kittinger program. As far as CPU performance is concerned, according to my estimate the 4 Mhz 6301Y of the Novag (16 Mhz with /4 divider) is close to, ~12% faster though, the 3 Mhz 65C02 of the Tandy. And the outcome is... 1.5 points granted to the Tandy! Despite playing the dark side, the Chess Champion 2150 played, to my humble opinion, a very good first game; positionally accurate and without obvious tactical flaws. If you check the position after move #16, you should see a strong center domination with a rather nice chain of Pawns, whilst the Super Nova has little to oppose. After move 38, the game is over for the Novag, still with that overwhelming center chain. Very impressive! :respekt: During the revenge game, the Super Nova dominated for a while, but the advantage faded away while reaching endgame. The prospects are then a drawn game, but the Tandy blundered on move 63 - a really bad tactical flaw - and the game was immediately a promised win for the Super Nova, with a Knight plus a Pawn advantage. Unfortunately it faced a dilemna: either sacrifice its Knight or its Pawn - and understandably but so wrongly chose to save the Knight, losing any chance for victory.

Good morning,
round 3 / group 8 starts with Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 6 vs Applied Concept Boris. In the first game as White, the Sensory 6 teaches Boris what a King attack is. The second game is a hastle: both devices perform a series of senseless moves, awaiting for something to change from the other device, each staying within its own half-zone of the board. The Sensory 6 is somewhat in a better position, but only a blunder from Boris will enable a potential win. Unfortunately for the Fidelity device, no code prevents from position repetition, and Boris saves half a point. A game to be forgotten.

Good morning to all,
next match is rather balanced, with theoretical 38/62 odds, between the Yeno 301XL and the Lexibook Chesslight. Indeed each device wins "its" game playing as White, therefore a fair division of points, one each. The 301XL is nevertheless dominated during the first half game as White, but fortunately for the Yeno, the Chesslight blunders on move #42. The second game is sort of a condensed, accelerated, similar scenario: despite playing White, the Chesslight is slightly dominated until move #20 but leverages a mistake from the Yeno to reverse steam.

Hi,
next match revealed much interesting. Well, rather the second game... Saitek GK2000 meets Novag Super Nova, with odds close to 1.5 / 0.5 score. And this is exactly what happened! But wait... In the first game, the GK2000 playing White gets the Super Nova out of its book as early as move #2, but can't leverage any advantage from this as it finds itself as well immediately out of book. The game is kept balanced for twenty moves or so, before turning to the advantage of the Saitek device. I guess the revenge game will please, at least attract attention from, the PSH lovers. :sabber: Unlike the previous game, both devices make use of their respective opening books, with a clear advantage for the Super Nova able to play twice as many moves from the book. Later, on move #18 and on the basis of a balanced position, it played what looks like a typical PSH-driven move, sacrificying a Bishop to dismantle the ennemy King's pawns shelter. :top: There is no material compensation to this sacrifice, only positional: a Knight + Queen threat around the ennemy King. The GK2000 is able to keep initiative, and applies pressure for a while, but at some point the potential threat resulting from the dangerous coordination Knight + Queen reveals too much for the Morsch program. Unfortunately (for the nice game sake) the Super Nova runs for a clear material advantage (a Rook up!), but doing so it lost initiative and the GK2000 can repeat a checking sequence and save half a point.

Good afternoon,
last match from group 8 provides another unexpected result: Tandy 2150 gets a full point from the Fidelity Designer Mach III Master 2265! According to the 285 CElo gap, odds were roughly 84/16 in favor of the Mach III. Or one point out of six games for the Tandy; therefore scoring so out of two games is an achievement. After leaving one point to the Saitek GK2000, another loss from the seeded player of this group is more than bad luck - and surely some Elo points abandonned once the tournament is over.:headpat: In the first game, the Mach III playing as Black commits a positional inaccuracy that lets the CC2150 widely open the position with an overwhelming control of center files. Soon this translates in a large material advantage (Queen+Pawn vs Rook) for the Tandy. Nevertheless not an easy win, with 50+ moves still to play. In the second game, the CC2150 as Black happily plays fourteen moves from its book, whilst the Mach III only ten. The position is kept balanced until late middlegame, then the Mach III gets a Pawns majority on King side. CC2150 defense is not accurate enough, it has no chance in the King+Pawns endgame, the Mach III leveraging its small, nevertheless efficient, hash tables.

Hi,
we now have all the information available to unveil the next phase of the tournament! Let's start with the main competition, 1/8th final, featuring sixteen chess computers: Code:
1st of group 1 DGT Centaur (2919) As you may read, no additional randomization is applied: matches were pre-designed, and ranking first in any selection group translates into an advantage, which is to initially face a second-ranked competitor. Winners of the selection phase can only meet on quarter-final phase; this of course does not exclude some second-ranked devices to access the next step. And the consolation cup list is as well completed, simply complying with the order the third-ranked computers were identified group after group: Code:
1 Novag Beluga (1701) Other computers can take a nap... I shall start matches with the main cup: let's keep the consolation cup for later. In this elimination phase, computers will face each other an even number of times, with alternate colors, until we get a winner. Good afternoon to everyone,
now a match with some fair chances both sides: Novag Constellation Expert vs Saitek/Mephisto Chess Challenger 10Mhz. That's roughly 1/3 to 2/3 odds... The first game with Constellation Expert playing White is a nice one, very seriously played by the Kittinger protégé. It kept an edge for 30 moves or so, before demonstrating how advanced Knights can shake a position :maul:. As a result, a mighty Pawns majority, and advanced ones on top of that, on Queen side. The Mephisto Chess Challenger is compelled to sacrifice a Bishop + a Rook to stop these, and game over :dead:. The second game looks the other way around, with the Morsch program being up all game long. The fall of the Constellation Expert speeds up after a tentative to attack the ennemy King that looks under PSH influence, but not that a relevant one. Here, PSH surely stands for "Passt Sicher Halbwegs" Well, shared score, lets go for another couple of games. Despite playing White again, the Constellation Expert stays on par only 15 moves or so, then loses an edge, and loses more starting from around move 20. Not a great game from the Expert, now led 1 to 2 points. In the revenge game, the lead is almost constantly on the White side (Saitek/Mephisto Chess Challenger) except for several periods where the Constellation Expert had opportunities to aim for a draw, using checking repetitions (Queen against exposed ennemy King). Despite not fully leveraging these chances, the Expert is lucky enough (or strong enough) to re-enter a final drawing sequence and save half a point :schwitzer:. Final score is 2.5 to 1.5, winner is the Chess Challenger, so moving up to quarter-final. The Constellation Expert leaves the competition, it has been a real pleasure to operate this so nice device running an interesting chess program. :top:

Good evening,
next match is another unbalanced one: Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 vs Novag Emerald Classic. Theoretical odds are 95/5 in favor of the Chinese bomber. Said another way, one should play 20 games to get a chance for the Novag to score 1 point. Well, as expected the L6-v2 scores two points from this match, and deserves its invitation card for the quarter-final. Not much to comment about: in both games, the Emerald Classic is meritorious with 20 moves or so resistance before going down and later resigning .

Hi, good afternoon to everybody,
fourth match from 1/8th final is Mephisto Milano v2.00 (a Milano box with a Nigel Short ROM inside) vs CT800 1.42. As the relative rankings suggest, no much trouble for the Chess 'T800' to terminate the humans -sorry, my bad- terminate the Schröder program and score two points. Well, in the first game though, the 'Nigel Short' defends itself as White with stamina: fifty moves or so resistance, before going down in twenty additional moves. For the CT800 playing as White, fifteen moves were enough to dominate, and twice as much to force the Milano into resignation.

Good morning,
a rather balanced match now, with roughly 44/56 odds between Tandy Chess Champion 2150 and Systema Challenge. I am rather happy with the Challenge's first game; it plays (as Black) with initiative, space gain, and advances a Pawn that will put enough pressure on the CC2150 to make it lose. The second game is somewhat harder from the Challenge standpoint until middlegame, as the Tandy pushes back efficiently and controls space. Then the Chess Champion 2150 commits a mistake that will cost it entering the early endgame a Bishop and a Pawn down. Looks like a game over, as on top of that the Challenge can push a Pawn to promotion, reaching two Queens and a Bishop vs a single Queen. Fatal error, the tempo used to promote lets the ennemy Queen enter a checking repetition series, and the Challenge stupidly jettisons half a point. Nevertheless, scoring 1.5 to 0.5, the Systema Challenge deserves a place into the quarter-final. Despite leaving the cup here, overall a successful competition from the Tandy 2150.

AW: The 64-cup
Hi,
now the Saitek/Mephisto "Chess Challenger" tuned to 32Mhz has to play the Millenium "The King Performance". With close to 390 CElo less (that's about 1 to 9 odds), the "Challenger" deserves its name and won't be much more than a sparring partner :box2:. The first game is an endurance test for both, lasting 88 moves. Not really worth the replay, you can save your time. The second one is more interesting, a shorter one, and the Chess Challenger playing as Black castles long. That is an opportunity for the H8 bug to occur later on, and it actually happened! I was immediately alerted, as the Chess Challenger moved instantly its Rook from the h8 square after an ennemy move it had little chances for having pondered about it. Bingo, the move is a mistake. The Chess Challenger was already dominated, therefore I doubt the outcome of this game would have not been a loss, anyway. No big an influence on the match, so. For fun and for information, once the game has been completed, I set the position up and let the Chess Challenger move: it plays the same Rook move, instantly. No pondering could have been involved after a position setup, thus indeed a H8 bug occurrence. I also used my trick to identify the move it would have computed, assuming no H8 bug: setup the position one half move before and White to move; make the White move obvious or forced, enable the rotating display of variation to ply2 (+rd:2) and let the Chess Challenger think the appropriate time. In this case, I used this position:
First time the H8 bug appears during the 64-cup (18 games played so far by either Chess Challenger, standard or tuned; and two more games to come, as the standard device will play quarter-final games; and is assumed not to survive these).
