AW: The 64-cup

Good evening,

last round for group five starts with the "match of the weak" (not the match of the week ) Mephisto Solar King vs Novag Chess Champion MK1.

The first game with Solar King as White is surprisingly slightly dominated by the MK1 between moves 10 to 15, then balanced until move 30. From this point, the Solar King fails three times in a row to mate in 1  and enables a rather easy draw opportunity for the MK1. Unfortunately the MK1 fails to grasp the chance for half a point, and the Solar King finally finds the mate in 1 that was pending for long (maybe thanks to captures that removed some pieces, simplifying the position).

The second game is more one-sided in favor of the Solar King, which missed to seize several chances for better moves - but how could we bear it a grudge? The device is under 1000 CElo...

By the way, the batteries went low in the Solar King during one of these games (the first set, unchanged so far, I used it for years) and I could replace them without losing the game: great! A small "s" on the display warned me; the device stopped accepting input; I switched it off, swapped the AA batteries one by one, powered it back on, the game was still present. :top:

Good morning all,

Applied Concept Sargon 2.5 gives a hard lesson to the Chess Champion Chess Partner 2000.

In the first game as Black, the CP2000 commits a usual mistake for such weak chess computers: reacting to a threat by a counterthreat, apparently keeping the balance, rather than simply escaping the initial threat. Often a bad miscalculation; here a loser move...

The second game is a short one, to my opinion the funniest so far in this competition. No comment! :ignore: (well, my comments are within the game.. make sure to browse it!)

Good evening,

According to their relative ranking, Novag Constellation 3,6/Quattro could have dreamt of scoring half a point from its match against the Yeno 532XL.

But this didn't happen. In its first game as White, the Constellation was close to a win on move 22; too bad it chose the wrong piece to achieve a Pawn capture: using my Queen or my Rook? :raffnix: The Rook was the winner move, it opted for the Queen... Nevertheless this left the position balanced, a draw was still possible. About 20 moves later, a single error from the 3,6 revealed itself enough for the 532XL to wrap-up the game.

Second game is balanced until move 40 or so, therefore a good game from the 3,6 as Black, before losing initiative and getting under the wheels of a strong combined attack, leveraging no less than a Knight, a Rook and the ennemy Queen.

Hi again,

and now, to the group 5 results:

Code:

1. CT800 1.42 (lv GMI 5m+10s) 6 points
2. Yeno 532XL (lv ti3) 4 points S/B 10,0
3. Mephisto Maestro Travel (lv 15s) 4 points S/B 2,0 Buchholz 8,0
4. Applied Concept Sargon 2.5 (lv 2) 4 points S/B 2,0 Buchholz 4,0
5. Mephisto Solar King (lv Turbo A8) 3 points
6. Novag Constellation 3.6/Quattro (lv 1) 2 points
7. Novag Chess Champion Chess Partner 2000 (lv 2) 1 point
8. Novag Chess Champion MK1 (lv 2) no point

As Maestro Travel and Sargon 2.5 achieved both 4 points and the same Sonneborn/Berger score, I used the Buchholz tie-break.

Therefore, CT800 and Yeno 532XL are in for the cup, and Maestro Travel can enter the consolation tournament.

And now, it is high time I introduced selection group 6, where the Berlin 68000 is the seeded player:

- Mephisto Berlin
- VEB RFT Schachcomputer SC2
- TEC Schachcomputer
- Novag Emerald Classic
- Scisys Sensor Chess + SPM (Strong Play Module)
- Vonset / Femuey L6-v1
- CXG Super Enterprise
- Scisys Intercontinental Traveler

If both Berlin and Emerald Classic qualify for the main cup (odds are high for this!), there might be some suspense for the consolation tournament. Would the Vonset L6 first version :vampir: rob the Super Enterprise from this place?

Wait and see...
MfG,
Tibono

Good evening,

To me, the first match of group 6 is reminiscent of the cold war: Mephisto Berlin vs RFT Schachcomputer SC2; western device vs eastern...

Of course with 1000+ CElo difference, plus a 16-biter 68000 facing a 8-biter U880, not to forget a Lang vs a Nelson-based program... what did you expect?

Funny enough, the SC2 commited suicide in both games, displaying a move that enabled mate in one and acknowledging resignation at the very same time (with blinking display and "Matt" LED), even though alternative moves would have delayed the end. Maybe unable to check all legal moves if set to level 2?

Good afternoon all,

another much unbalanced match: TEC Schachcomputer vs Novag Emerald Classic. Peter Jenning's program MicroChess is an early pioneer in chess computing for microcomputers, while the Emerald Classic benefits from fifteen years or so more development. The TEC can only follow a regular descent under the pressure of the much more accurate moves of the Novag computer. But it is so vintage, with its unique form factor and old-fashioned electronic sounds, a pleasure to play with! The Emerald Classic is strong, but compared to the TEC, lacks attraction.

Hi,

the next match could have been pretty balanced, with two computers belonging to the same category (only about 100 CElo gap between these): Scisys Sensor Chess with SPM vs Vonset / Femuey L6-v1. But the L6 is rather strong from a tactical standpoint, even in this first version, whilst the Sensor Chess can leverage chess skills but is tactically vulnerable. And the Chinese device prevailed, especially during the second game as black, the shortest so far (only 13 moves) in which a naughty trap is set: capture the ennemy Queen at the price of a mate in 2. The Sensor Chess didn't smell the mate threat and fell in the trap. :dead:

Hello, good evening all,

the first round is now completed with this last match, and results in clear rankings: the four strongest computers score two points each, and will fight each other next round, and the weakest ones got zero points and will be the second half of the next round. Rightly sorted!

This last match is CXG Super Enterprise vs Scisys Intercontinental Traveler with 540 CElo discrepancy: an easy walk for the Danielsen's 16K program. The level I use is A5+H2, this stands for 15secs/move, standard openings, aggressive playing style.

Hello,

Today starts with the match TEC Schachcomputer vs VEB RFT Schachcomputer SC2. The outcome is as close as possible to what we could expect, with 1.5 points for the SC2 and half a point for the TEC, but watching the games reveals it happened by chance more than by chess logic. This reminds such devices, if able to play "look-alike" chess in the middlegame, are definitely powerless in the endgame phase.

In the first game, TEC playing as White, the SC2 holds the lead for a while, up to a clearly winning position with a majority of Pawns and promotion prospects, but offers a path to promotion to an ennemy Pawn and neglects pushing forward its own best candidate for promotion on several opportunities. Once up a Queen, the TEC could have won, even reached a simple mate in 2 opportunity but failed to spot it, and the game ends per repetition. At some point, I ceased trying to add symbols or comments to bad moves, as it was getting useless and boring. :wall:

The second game with SC2 playing with light pieces has been more straightforward, with main mistakes performed on the TEC side. Nevertheless, the TEC could have attempted a move repetition with good chances the SC2 would have stupidly followed this path. But the TEC chose another move that soon led to a mate.

Hi,

the second match from round 2/group 6 is Scisys Intercontinental Traveler vs Scisys Sensor Chess + SPM. With close to 300 CElo points more for the Sensor Chess, the result is as expected (2 points for the strongest one).

Nevertheless, the games are a bit deceptive, with inaccuracies from the Kaplan program that delayed the expected wins, especially in the second game as White that lasted no less than 72 moves. Worse, at some point in this second game (move 25), the Sensor Chess locks its own King in a mate net... and is lucky the Mike Johnson's program doesn't find the correct move. :schwitzer:

Good morning all,

the top match from group 6 occurs now, during round 2: Novag Emerald Classic vs Mephisto Berlin. According to the respective rankings, the most probable outcome is 0.5 to 1.5 in favor of the Lang program, and that is exactly what happened. As a matter of fact, the Berlin is the first seeded player in this competition that doesn't achieve the full 6 points from its selection tournament.

Both devices rather play on the safe side of style, therefore the first game is balanced without much tactics involved, and ends in a draw. In the second game, the Berlin playing as White slowly builds its lead without obvious mistakes from the Emerald Classic, the only one I could spot being a positional inaccuracy that revealed significant many moves later. Nothing to complain about, from the heir to Kittinger series.

Hi,

those who consider the Vonset L6 not that welcome (I guess there are some :D) will be relieved after this match: the CXG Super Enterprise deserves its 150 or so CElo points more, achieving two wins in a row.

The Danielsen program looks to have better positional skills, mainly in the area of better Pawns management, prone to better development and board center domination. The Super Enterprise can be sometimes inconsistent due to tactical weaknesses, but as the L6 couldn't find some, the best strategy prevailed in the end. Happy end for the Super Enterprise!

Hi, good morning all,

Two poor dudes with no more than half a point for total score after two rounds, four games, meet now: TEC Schachcomputer and Scisys Intercontinental Traveler.

In the first game as White, the TEC adds a second half-point to its basket.

Now the odds are in favor of the small Scisys, featuring around 120 CElo points advantage, and playing as White in this second game. Yet, it failed to a fork threat from the TEC, which from then plays a Rook up and dominates till the end. Wraping up the win is a bit painful though, the TEC missed five (5 !) match-balls (mate in 1) before conclusion .

Nevertheless, a nice achievement from MicroChess, the Peter Jenning's pioneer, and a deceptive run from the Mike Johnson's program :irked:.

Hello,

in the next match, the Scisys Sensor Chess with SPM provides evidence it deserves the close to 300 CElo points more it owns.

Its opponent is the Schachcomputer SC2. In the first game, as soon as move number 10, the SC2 suffers a Knight fork. Nevertheless it can keep up with the situation until around move 30, leveraging a rather closed position; unfortunately the SC2 opens the game, too subtle a consideration for such a weak device (so, nothing to complain about). A deserved win for the Kaplan/Barnes program.

In the second game, Sensor Chess plays as Black and quickly gets an advantage within its opening book, meaning the error played by the SC2 is stored, and the refutation (not an obvious one) included! Of course, with such an early handicap, the SC2 can't do much in the rest of the game. It nevertheless reaches the endgame with only one Pawn down, but that's enough for a promotion and another win for the Sensor Chess.

Good afternoon all,

the Novag Emerald Classic gives a harsh spank :maul: to the Vonset L6-v1.
The result was to be expected, with 450 CElo points advantage for the Emerald Classic; but the Vonset seemed to be in a very bad mood, looking for punishment :vogel:

In the first game, the Vonset blunders immediately; I mean its very first move played out of its opening book is a blunder. OK, the material loss is six plies deep, requiring some calculation ability, but the positional mistake is rather simple from a human perspective. Anyway an interesting sequence of moves, I suggest you should check it!

The second game with Vonset playing as White is as well decided very early, on move number 9 which is an absolute blunder  . I really can't find any reason for such a move; there is no deep calculation involved thus it can't be a horizon effect. I also couldn't figure out how a null move insertion could eventually raise a hope for the Vonset; therefore I suspect a hash collision. Once the game completed, I replayed it until the blunder position: at first try the Vonset played another, harmless move; but after a take back chose the same blunder again. Therefore the bad move is context-dependant rather than resulting from a clear programming error... And the game ends in no more than twenty moves.

Good evening,

last match for group 6 is CXG Super Enterprise vs Mephisto Berlin. That's close to 500 CElo gap, so no-one should be surprised by the outcome: two indisputable wins for the Berlin.

No epic combination to point out in those games, only the usual slow pace and step by step strangulation from the Lang protégé.

Hey,

time now for the 6th group results:
Code:

1. Mephisto Berlin (lv N3) 5,5 points
2. Novag Emerald Classic (lv AT4) 4,5 points
3. CXG Super Enterprise (lv A5+H2) 4 points S/B 10,0
4. Scisys Sensor Chess + SPM (lv 2) 4 points S/B 5,5
5. Vonset / Femuey L6-v1 (lv 19) 2 points S/B 16,5
6. TEC Schachcomputer (lv 4) 2 points S/B 8,0
7. VEB RFT Schachcomputer SC2 (lv 2) 1,5 points
8. Scisys Intercontinental Traveler (lv 3) 0,5 points

So, the Berlin and the Emerald Classic enter the main competition, and the Super Enterprise qualifies for the consolation tournament.

Only two selection groups are left to play, here is the 7th one:

- Mephisto II
- Mephisto Chess Challenger 32Mhz
- Fidelity Excellence
- Conic Computer Chess
- Mephisto Chess Challenger 10Mhz
- Applied Concept Boris Diplomat
- Fidelity Chess Challenger 10
- Saitek Blitz

It is funny the random distribution arranged both Mephisto Chess Challenger devices within the same group (the 32Mhz version being the seeded player). Will they meet? Let's figure out...

Good morning all,

the first game for group 7 is just a formality for the mighty Mephisto Chess Challenger tuned to 32Mhz, facing the Mephisto II "brikett".

In the first game as White, the brikett leaves its King exposed in the center for a bit too long, gets aware castling became urgent but chose the wrong side :o: castle long while the a file was already semi-opened for the ennemy Rook. I think this was the main mistake committed.

In the second game, the Mephisto/Saitek Chess Challenger playing with light pieces achieves a strong domination of the center, thus the Mephisto II couldn't do much.

Hi,

next game is an opportunity for me to get the Conic Computer Chess out, as I didn't use it since long. Well, I think I remember why, now...

The issue is not with the playing level; sure it is weak, but I play with a lot of tenderness with any weak chess computer. No, the flaw is this metal jacks system for move detection... Moving the pieces on behalf of the Conic is not an issue, as long as you reach the expected position the computer is happy.

The other way around, which is inputing your player moves, is another story. The device is very sensitive to the way you manipulate the pieces, and is prone to reject your move tentative, displaying blinking LEDs instead of steady ones. And this can happen at any step: when pulling your piece out of the source square, when pulling an ennemy captured piece out, when inserting your piece down in the target square. If so, you need to restore the initial position and retry the move from scratch.

Sometimes it can fail several times in a row... thus move, move back, move, move back, retry... The worst case is castling. You need to successfully pull your King and get a steady LED. Then insert the King in its new square, woops, blinking LEDs. Set the King back in initial place. Pull the King. Blinking LED, not good. Re-insert the King. Pull it, by chance the LED is steady, insert it in the new square, great !! Second steady LED! Now pull the Rook out... Sh*t, three blinking LEDs... restart from scratch :wall:. Long story made short, you need a bit of luck to achieve the castling move with four steady LEDs, now you can press Enter to let the computer move.

Well, after playing a couple of games, you should have developed some training and technics increasing the chances for successful move detection: be straight and fast, but not too fast; let the piece fall freely in the location then apply a clean vertical fast push down from above, if this doesn't work insert only a couple millimeters, make sure the LED is steady, and once this occurs, complete the push down of the piece... :verrückt:

The good news is, despite the hassle, one can play full games assuming a bit of patience. And games were not that long, as the opponent is this round is the Fidelity Electronics Excellence (3 Mhz). 600 CElo points difference is more than enough to shorten the games to around twenty moves :)...

Good morning,

next match is a no-brainer for the standard Mephisto/Saitek Chess Challenger, thus running at 10 Mhz: the Boris Diplomat is pretty helpful, aiming at soon encountering better suiting chess computers for itself. Zero points should be convenient for a better fit, next round. :D

Hello,

let's complete the first round of group 7 with another definitely unbalanced game: Saitek "Kasparov" Blitz vs Fidelity Chess Challenger 10, again more than 600 CElo points discrepancy.

In both games, the CC10 soon suffers a material disadvantage, and that's enough for a fast collapse. :dead:

Good afternoon everybody,

round 2 offers an opportunity to Mephisto II "brikett" to start scoring, as it has to play with the Conic Computer Chess: with close to 250 CElo points more, the brikett should at least score 1.5 points.

Actually it achieves the full 2 points, but it wasn't that easy: playing with black pieces in the first game, the brikett couldn't get any substantial advantage during around 30 moves; even suffering from a bad position in its King's corner. Fortunately for the Brikett, the Conic failed to a fork from a naughty Pawn, which will toggle the game in favor of the Mephi II.

In the second game, the brikett playing as White gets out of the opening phase with a strong center domination; both devices castle long, the game opens and the Mephisto II center Pawns apply pressure - one of them will later promote.

Hello,

odds for next game are 2/3 to 1/3 in favor of the Chess Challenger 10 facing the Boris Diplomat: both devices date from the same era, and the match is fair.
Maybe I forgot to tell this CC10 is the "B" version, as aware ones would have noticed thanks to the castling moves.

The Boris Diplomat keeps up in the first game until move number 11 (playing as Black) but stupidly loses a Rook and of course, from this loss on, just goes down.

Funny enough, next game playing as White, the Boris commits a mistake on move number 11 again, and the Chess Challenger 10 dominates the rest of the game. It ends in a draw though, as no code prevents position repetition; this is how even the weakest chess computers can score when playing other weak computers. :p

good evening all,

now something I much appreciate from such a competition... a big surprise!

This happened in the match Fidelity Excellence vs Mephisto/Saitek Chess Challenger 32 Mhz. According to the (my!) relative rankings, the Excellence can dream of stealing one point from the very fast Morsch program once in 9 games... And did it! :victoria:

It was the first game, Excellence playing as White. I don't think the MCC32 committed obvious mistakes, by the way no H8 bug occurred (this could have been a reason for a win by the Excellence, but... :nene:). Rather the Excellence played a very strong move 22; with a lot of potential consequences, if my analysis is correct (it was a tough one). I think it has been the game changer move, but the Excellence had still 50 or so more moves to play to achieve the win, not an easy challenge facing the... Challenger :)
Well, I struggled and lost so often playing the Excellence that I am happy seing such a strong computer as the MCC32 can be on the loser side as well :D

Of course the Chess Challenger 32 Mhz got a clear revenge, playing as White in the second game.
