Re: The 64-cup

Guten Morgen Alle,

the last match from group 3 swiss tournament is complete. It sets the mighty Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 against the strong Saitek Turbo King II. :box2:

Well, I wouldn't have thought I would ever see the Turbo King receive such a spank from another chess computer. That was the first game, it was the Black player. The L6 playing White pieces puts such a pressure onto the opponent King corner, the Turbo King never could grasp a breathing. :dead:

The only weakness the Vonset let appear, during this first game and still more in the second one, is an inclination to procrastinate the win. Instead of going for the kill in a straightforward manner, it manages to increase its material advantage and bothers to defend not anymore useful chessmen.

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

as a consequence, here is the group 3 crosstable:
Code:

1. Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 (lv 22) 6 points
2. Fidelity Champion Sensory Chess Challenger (lv E 40/10 20/5) 4 points, S/B 16.0
3. Saitek Turbo King II (lv a4) 4 points, S/B 10.0
4. Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 9b (lv 2) 4 points, S/B 8.5
5. Yeno 320XT (lv an5) 2 points
6. Novag Chess Champion Super System III (lv 15s) 1.5 points, S/B 13.5
7. Fidelity Mini Sensory Chess Challenger + CAC (lv 1) 1.5 points, S/B 8.0
8. Saitek Calculator Chess (lv a8) 1 point

So, the L6-v2 and the Champion deserve their admittance into the main cup! Not all is lost for the Turbo King II, it enters the consolation cup.

Let me introduce group 4; where the Millenium Chess Genius Pro will fight as the seeded player:
- Mephisto Milano v2.00
- Mephisto I-X
- VEB RFT Chess-Master Diamond + PM11
- Mephisto Europa A
- Millenium Chess Genius Pro
- Tiger Grenadier
- Novag Carnelian II
- Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor

The Chess-Master Diamond is the weakest in this group, but I hope for an interesting match with the I-X "brikett". They should theoretically meet in round 2.

MfG,
Tibono

Hi, good evening,

group 4 round 1 starts with the match Mephisto Milano v2.00 (Nigel Short program inside) against Mephisto 1X. The 1X plays fairly well in both games, but only for twenty moves or so; which is already a nice achievement. Then things inexorably go wrong: two points for the Schröder 8-biter.

Re: The 64-cup

Good morning all,

Now the large wooden Chess-Master Diamond with PM11 module bravely meets the small, nevertheless strong, Mephisto Europa A.

As I don't own the opening module (PM10), for variety sake I shall let the CMD play without 'best' mode for its very first moves (6 as White, 5 as Black); then I shall restore the 'best' selection for the rest of the game.

With close to 400 CElo points margin, the Morsch program should easily prevail. This did not happen in the first game, a long and boring one you can exempt yourself from watching: the middlegame is kept closed for about fifteen moves where pieces go back and forth with high odds for a draw per repetition. The Europa A program has nothing to prevent that, it would have been a nice achievement from the CMD to get half a point from this match. Unfortunately, it is happy with a slightly positive score, and denies the draw twice. Once the game opens, the Europa A sets a strong pressure onto the White king corner, the Diamond commits a positional error weakening a key square, and due to the famous horizon effect commits a tactical mistake in addition. Game over.

The second game is much shorter, with a Diamond blunder  as soon as the eighth move. A piece of cake for the Europa A.

Re: The 64-cup

Hello, wish you all a nice afternoon,

If one of the matches the seeded player will have to play can provide an unexpected result, it definitely is the one with the Tiger Grenadier, which can play odd chess :verrückt: and achieve either the best or the worst.

In the first game as Black, it is a bit unwise, sending a Knight deep into the Chess Genius Pro position; four moves later the bold Knight is lost, just able to remove an ennemi Pawn, to avoid dying alone. The meticulous Lang program needed nothing more to ensure the win.

The second game: Grenadier now plays White and resists 25 moves or so, before (again!) wrongly moving a Knight, outside the area it was needed in for defense sake. Two points for the Chess Genius Pro.

Guten Abend Alle,

let's step forward with next match, a balanced one: Novag Carnelian II vs Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor. According to my private CElo ranking, over 100 games, the Carnelian II is expected to win 57 points and the Maestro should score the rest, therefore 43 points. Very close, isn't it?

Well, the expectation is fulfilled: 1 point each from this match, a slightly deceptive result as it is the outcome of two draws after rather shy chess played by both. Both chess computers play pretty restrained and miss several opportunities for more interesting fights.

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

round 2 for group 4 starts with VEB RFT Chess-Master Diamond + PM11 versus Hegener & Glaser Mephisto I-X. Again a balanced match, in the same area as the previous one, as far as probabilities are concerned: theoretically 56 points out of 100 in favor of the brikett.

The first game with Diamond playing White is thoroughly balanced from a material standpoint; the Diamond offered twice a nice opportunity for the 1X which failed to spot it. The game ends in a draw.

I am happy with the second game, where the Chess-Master achieves a win: it is such a nice device! Of course, both computers miss some opportunities across the whole game, but the Diamond finds the killer move 27 ... Bxf3! and the 1X will never recover from that :dead:. At some point it could have drawn per repetition, but failed to play it.

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

as the Tiger Grenadier scored zero points after meeting the Chess Genius Pro, it now has more than a chance to come back, facing the modest Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor.

As I use specific settings for the Grenadier evaluation, maybe worth mentioning these: Shield (King safety) raised from 20 to 25%, and Eval Pawn from 0 to 2%. Of course they should not much influence the result of this unbalanced match; nevertheless the Stadlbauer Maestro has been a rather fine trainer as it did not commit blatant blunders; just being slowly overwhelmed. Both games in 49 moves; funny isn't it?

Re: The 64-cup

Hello,

now the Mephisto Milano v2.00 (a standard Milano equipped with a Nigel Short ROM) meets the Novag Carnelian II. Odds are over 96% in favor of the Schröder program...

In the first game, the Carnelian II playing with the dark pieces loses too much material far too early, starting with move 12. Then the game just looks like a mouse trapped under the paws of a big cat. :yummy:

Playing with the light pieces in the second game, the Carnelian II fares much better, pretty on par with the Milano v2 during 25 moves or so. It then tries to gain some material, capturing a supported Pawn with its Bishop, simultaneously unveiling a threat on the ennemy Bishop. :idee!!!: Unfortunately, the threatened Bishop can escape with tempo... Wrong calculation, little Carnelian...

Hi,

last match for round 2 faces the Millenium Chess Genius Pro and the Mephisto Europa A. With roughly 600 CElo more, the CGP has nothing to worry about.

The first game is just a steady glide down for the Morsch program; while a clear error during the second one throws it down as soon as move 19.

Re: The 64-cup

Good morning all,

round 3 for group 4 starts with Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor vs H&G Mephisto 1-X.

The first game is definitely balanced, a short one as the position after move 19 is repeated three times (announced by the brikett with a dot in the middle position in the display, whilst the Schachprofessor didn't announce it).

The second game is much more interesting, the 1X playing as White commits a positional blunder that switches the game to the bad side for it.

Re: The 64-cup

Guten Abend Alle,

Odds are roughly 2/3 to 1/3 for the next clash, Novag Carnelian II vs VEB RFT Chess-Master Diamond + PM11. With 1.5 points to 0.5, the match outcome is 3/4 to 1/4, therefore a rather good score for the Carnelian II.

But zooming into the games, the Carnelian II cannot much boast about this performance:
- indeed it won as Black in the first game, but very early the Diamond clumsily tried to avoid an expected capture, sacrificying a Bishop for nothing;
- and in the second game as White, after another mistake from the Diamond (and a very early one) it outrageously dominates the game, with a Rook and a Pawn material advantage roughly for 20 moves or so, just to deceptively draw the game with a three-rep.! And cherry on the cake, it announced it, therefore the program should have been aware before playing the drawing move...

Hi Tibono,

I noticed too this type of unnecessary drawing with the Carnelian II.
The only explanation I can think of, is that the 3-time repetition detection routine stands loose from the position evaluation routine, so has no effect on the evaluation value?!

Re: The 64-cup

hello all,

next match has been a rather exciting one; with the Mephisto Europa A giving sort of a lesson to the Tiger Grenadier, which can feel very lucky with a shared score. As far as hardware is concerned, it is a very modest 6301Y with 2 actual Mhz facing a powerful SH7034 @20Mhz (that's 13.7 times faster according to my estimation!)

As often, the Grenadier chooses rather unusal openings, but funny enough is out of its book sooner than the Europa - and this is true in both games!

During the first game as White, the small Morsch program plays better chess than the Donninger's one. I am not a strong player but I could immediately spot some odd moves from the Grenadier - no need for any deep analysis to tag them as questionable. The Grenadier only saves itself :schwitzer: thanks to a hasty Pawn promotion, the materialist Europa A allowed itself to be tempted with, neglecting a corridor mate threat.

In the second game with opposite castlings, both devices prepare attacking the opponent King's corner, the Grenadier can push forward three linked Pawns whilst the Europa A is faster with one single storming Pawn the Grenadier failed to consider dangerous enough. As soon as move 34 the King of the Grenadier is disloged from its corner and threatened by no less than two Rooks, a Queen and two Bishops... that could have mate in 4. That's a bit deep for the Europa, so the fight will last much longer, nevertheless ending in a win for the small device. :respekt:

Hi,

to complete group 4 matches, Millenium Chess Genius Pro plays with Mephisto Milano v2.00. With close to 300 CElo points in favor of the CGP, the Milano doesn't stand much chance and loses both games. At least, it is able to resign, so there is no need to play to the bitter end.

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

we now can have a look to the group 4 tournament table:
Code:

1. Millenium Chess Genius Pro (lv 15s) 6 points
2. Mephisto Milano v2.00/N. Short (lv T40/10) 4 points
3. Tiger Grenadier (tibono setting lv 15s avg) 3 points, S/B 8.0
4. Mephisto Europa A (lv a3) 3 points, S/B 7.0
5. Novag Carnelian II (lv we4) 2.5 points, S/B 5.5
6. Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor (lv h4) 2.5 points, S/B 4.0
7. VEB RFT Chess-Master Diamond + PM11 (lv 2) 2 points
8. Mephisto I-X (lv a3) 1 point

As a result, the Chess Genius Pro and the Milano v2/Nigel Short both qualify for the main competition. Tiger Grenadier is more than happy to enter the consolation cup.

And now let me introduce group 5, where the CT800 v1.42 is the seeded player:

- Mephisto Solar King
- Novag Chess Champion Chess Partner 2000
- Novag Chess Champion MK1
- Mephisto Maestro Travel
- Applied Concept Sargon 2.5
- Novag Constellation 3,6/Quattro
- CT800 1.42
- Yeno 532XL

As far as the average CElo is concerned, that's the weakest group in this competition... I already fear handling the MK1, I shall need to focus a lot!

Stay tuned,
Tibono

Re: The 64-cup

Good morning all,

first match in group 5 is expected to provide weak chess games: Novag Chess Champion Chess Partner 2000 vs Mephisto Solar King. The CP2000 is a bit of a hassle to handle it: tough contacts, need to keyin twice on captures, need to confirm moves with the Enter key. Furthermore, you must not use this Enter key after keying in the computer moves, otherwise it changes color, and moves. In a nutshell, a pain in the neck...

About the Solar King: I use the "turbo" mode which means powered with batteries rather than light. Light works, of course, but in this mode the device is intolerably slow and weak (the clock pace is dramatically slowed down to save energy).

In the first game (CP2000 plays as White) the lead switches several times from one computer to the other, along with the most significant mistakes :D. As often, the last one (on move 56) establishes the winner, the Solar King.

In the revenge game, 16 moves are enough to toggle the game in favor of the CP2000. Shared score, one point each.

Re: The 64-cup

Hello,

A bit of a surprise playing the second match in group 5, round 1: Novag Chess Champion MK1 vs Mephisto Maestro Travel. Of course the surprise is not blowing in the score: two points for the Maestro Travel, no worries. Who would have thought the MK1 would grasp any semipoint or more?

No, the surprise is the MK1 could proudly stand 28 moves on par with the Maestro Travel, in its first game as White. Even then, the mistake it commits is a positional one, quite obvious for a human player, not so much for a weak program. And the Maestro Travel will still need 10 moves or so to get a strong material advantage... Good job, little MK1!

On another hand, if playing with the CP2000 is a pain in the neck, doing so with the MK1 as White is a pain in the a$$ :headache:

The second game is much much comfortable: at first, playing the MK1 as Black is straightforward, you just need to focus on the input to avoid potential mess, as there is no control. And the second reason is the game only lasted 16 moves, the MK1 being thoroughly overwhelmed by an early attack from the Maestro Travel.

as the meteo is not great around Paris, France, I could play more games than usual.

Here are the next ones: Applied Concept Sargon 2.5 vs Novag Constellation 3,6/Quattro. The later means my device is equiped with a Quattro ROM, which appears to be one of the configurations built and sold by Novag, most probably close to the end of life of the Constellation 3,6 device. Unfortunately, the combination results in a shifted clock/levels managements; level 2 is close to 20-25 secs/move therefore too slow for my standard pace (15 secs/m); and the 3,6 Quattro must climb down to level 1 which is significantly faster. At least it can ponder and use more time awaiting its opponent...

According to relative strengths, the Sargon 2.5 could hope for half a point from this match, but it didn't happen.

In the first game as White, Sargon 2.5 can't do much, a short game already pretty decided around move number 15.

In the second game, Sargon 2.5 blunders as soon as move number 10; but the Constellation 3,6/Quattro needed many moves to achieve this win.

Re: The 64-cup

Guten Tag Alle,

the top match in this group occurs as soon as round 1 (the initial matches are defined randomly; next rounds are of course organized according to the scores, as the selection phase uses a Swiss tournament mode).

That is CT800 1.42 vs Yeno 532XL. OK, the Yeno is the second best in this group, but roughly 450 CElo less is an overwhelming disadvantage. Despite being a rather strong fighter, the 532XL didn't stand a foot on the ground. :headpat:

Some additional information about the CT800 settings:
- speed is 100% (default, no overclocking)
- level 15 secs/move is not available with the 1.42 version I own; therefore I use the GMI mode (game in) with 5 minutes for the game plus 10 secs per move. That's 300+600 = 900 secs for 60 moves = 15 secs/move granted for the first batch of 60 moves. Should the game last longer, the average time/move of course decreases but no less than 10 secs per move.

Good morning all,

round 2 for group 5 starts with Applied Concept Sargon 2.5 mistreating the poor Novag Chess Champion MK1.

The first game is lost for the "Chess Champion" as soon as its third move. In the second one, playing as White :schwitzer: the same occurs much later , at move number seven. Even Sargon 2.5 is surprised, it says: "so soon?". What follows is just a massacre :maul:, as Sargon played in a very materialistic way: at the move mate, the lead is a Rook, two Bishops, a Knight and four Pawns for Sargon. That's a spank!

Good evening chaps,

another unbalanced match: Mephisto Solar King vs Yeno 532XL, with roughly 850 CElo points discrepancy, according to my rating list. So, two points scored by Ulf Rathsman' program. Good morning,

the weather is rainy over Paris, so I had to shorten my usual bike ride...

This match is Mephisto (by Saitek) Maestro Travel vs Novag Chess Champion Chess Partner 2000. With more than 450 CElo points in favor of the Maestro Travel, it was expected to be an easy walk for it.

Things went in a different way.

Not during the first game, where the CP2000 as Black played like a beginner, moving its Queen out very early, letting the Maestro develop itself with tempi.
Few moves later, the Maestro pins the poor Queen and the game is soon over.

The second game deserves watching it. It is the shortest so far in this competition, and the CP2000 was on the verge of a win! As soon as its third move out of book, the Maestro Travel blunders, unaware of the trap it left its Queen in. And CP2000 played the correct refutation move! Was it by chance or complete calculation? I suspect the CP2000 at least smelled the hit...:juchu:
Too bad for the suspense, shortly later it failed to survive a fork and the lucky Maestro Travel could save the game.

Hallo Alle,

the Chess Terminator offers no chance to the Constellation 3,6/Quattro. The Novag forfeits no estime, to my opinion it did not commit any blatant mistake nor blunder: just going under the wheels of the much stronger CT800.

The first game with CT800 playing as White is rather short with less than 30 moves; whilst in the second game the "3,6" achieves a worthy of respect resistance.
