AW: The 64-cup

Zitat von Tibono (Beitrag 119906)
first match in group 2, round 1 is Novag Chess Champion Delta-1 vs Scisys Chess Companion III. With 600 CElo discrepancy as an order of magnitude, the two points gained by the CCIII are far from being any surprise.

I shall refrain from writing much comments :tapedshut, otherwise my question mark key would get worn out by too much hits, and you would get bored. In the first game, a funny white King journey occurs for the Delta-1, reaching 6th row before going back to its initial position on e1 square, just to get mated. In the second game, the Delta-1 as black stubbornly pushes its Pawns, to such an extent that only on move 14 does it move a piece. It is of course so under-developped that it is a piece of cake :yummy: for the Chess Companion III.

Tibono

Hi Tiboni
You are right. You shouldn't have to press the mark key button so much. :) :)
Kind regards
Kurt

Re: The 64-cup

Hello,

the second match is with Ron Nelson's Excalibur Ivan (the Terrible) and the puny Novag Octo, which cannot stand a chance - two points for Ivan (who often said 'I will crush you, I will destroy you' ...).

In the first game, Octo playing black cherished illusions until its decisive blunder move #31.

In the second game, Octo as white can only play 8 moves before a first error, then things get worse as soon as move #11. Very few resistance offered!

Hi,

next match is again very unbalanced ... The Millenium King Performance runs over the Fidelity Chess Challenger 7; in no more than 20 moves with the light pieces; and 30 moves with the dark ones.

At least, this gave me the opportunity to clean my CC7 from some dust that covered it

Re: The 64-cup

Hello,

round 1 for group 2 is now completed, with a kind of surprise: a fairly balanced match :box2: with the Novag Constellation Expert featuring some 100 CElo or so advantage, compared to its opponent the Mephisto Rebell 5. This should theorically lead to 64 to 36 points over 100 games; nevertheless the Rebell 5 won both games! :victoria:

As soon as move #14, the Constellation Expert attacks the Black King and gathers three pieces in the area. Unfortunately, few moves later, with a choice between two light pieces to attack further on (a Knight and a Bishop, with support from the Queen), the Expert chose the wrong one (used them in the wrong sequence) and the attack hanged fire with some material loss. It is then a long way for the Rebell to achieve the win as Black.

In the second game, none of both computers seems to be aware of the rule about a passed Pawn file; where Rooks belong to, behind the Pawn (whatever for support or defense). Only once the Pawn reached the seventh rank did the Expert realize its Rook was required there; thus postponing the promotion. But few moves later it blundered badly, letting the Rebell move its own Rook behind its passed Pawn, game over...

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

a match of weak ones now: Novag Octo vs Novag "Chess Champion" Delta-1. Just a reminder: the Delta-1 code is a messed-up copy of the Boris, dating from Novag's early pirate era. Did I mention it likes to push its Pawns? Yes, I did... and the first game provides an evidence: it IS a bloody pawn-pusher... Only on move #10 does it finally agree to move anything else... under the pressure from a check. The Octo is a bit lucky, as the Delta-1 was unable to spot several opportunities for a mate in 2.

The second game is a massacre for material: the Octo achieves mate with a Queen, 2 Rooks, 1 Bishop and 1 Knight advantage (and a Pawn more, too, but this gets marginal :)).

Re: The 64-cup

Hi, good evening all,

with zero points from the first round, the Novag Constellation Expert badly needs to recover. It is an easy match for him, as once Octo and Delta-1 fought together, the only opponent left as well with no points is... the Fidelity Chess Challenger 7. A piece of cake for the Expert...

In the first game, The Expert with light pieces commits a mistake on move 16, but the CC7 is (of course) overwhelmed by the position and commits a much more bad error in return. The rest of the game is a health walk for the Expert.

Second game: a very usual error from the CC7, often occuring from weak chess computers: after a piece capture that should have been treated in a simple way as an exchange thru an immediate re-capture, the CC7 instead threats another piece. Well, two opponent's pieces hanging should do the trick? No, no...

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

third match in round 2 for group 2 is: Excalibur Ivan The Terrible against Scisys Chess Companion III. According to the current ranking of both computers in my private list, the odds are 6.6 to 1 in favor of Ivan, featuring a fast H8@12Mhz versus the weaker Companion III with a rather limited 6301Y@2Mhz. But it runs a Kaplan/Barnes program I am found of... And :respekt: the small Scisys gets a full point from the match and, cherry on the cake, gets this win with dark pieces!!

This was the first game, in which Ivan slowly built an expected win, until a first noticeable mistake on move 49. It was during the endgame phase, known to be a weakness from Nelson's program, and the position required positional awareness rather than material calculation. Ivan missed the opportunity to achieve the win; nevertheless a draw was still possible. But a similar positional choice occured few moves later, same mistake repeated from Ivan and the game is now lost.

On the revenge game, no such a chance for the Chess Companion III: a mistake in the early endgame leaves it with some material disadvantage Ivan could easily turn into a win.

Hi Tibono,

Thanx for this match! Interesting to know that my very first chess computer, the Tandy 1850, could be able to beat such a computer once in a while! ;)

Regards, Paul

Re: The 64-cup

Hello,
good afternoon all,

round 2 for group 2 is now completed, with two wins for the King Performance facing Rebell 5. Not an unexpected result, with 700+ CElo for the de Koning mighty device!

Nevertheless a good game as White for the Schröder bomber from 1986; with a rather balanced game until move 40 or so. Actually, move 40 is the first clear mistake from Rebell 5: good job, Ed!

Unfortunately, the second game is far from the above: a miniature one, completed in less then 20 moves. Already three to four moves after leaving its opening book, the Rebell is in bad shape, lacking King safety. And the King program can be merciless...

Hi,

third round starts with Fidelity Chess Challenger 7 facing the Novag Chess Champion Delta-1. Both belong to the same era, and it was fun to watch their very similar red displays side to side. Similarity stops there, the Delta-1 is no fierce opposition to the CC7 :nene:. Two points for Ron's best seller.

Good evening guys,

next match is an easy one for the Novag Constellation Expert: the Novag Octo. The only fear I have is: these two points gained won't weigh much in the S/B calculation that I expect will be important for the final ranking of group 2 participants. I want to play more with the wonderful Constellation Expert! :bitte:

Re: The 64-cup

Hello, good morning,

I have good news to share; I trust they will please Paul in addition to all lovers of the Constellation Expert and PSH (including myself).

The fact is the small Kaplan program powering the Companion III (and the Tandy 1850 ;)) managed to get half a point from its match against the Rebell 5, that's an achievement! Even more impressive, it had an edge since late middlegame, was one Pawn up in the endgame, but the position was still risky with both Queens still on board; thus I consider smart it repeated moves for a draw (maybe not that knowingly, though :gruebel:).

As a consequence, the Rebell with 3.5 points stands now behind the Expert (4 points) and I trust Ivan will not be able to increase the 3 points it owns so far, as the last match for group 2 will be against the King Performance... Therefore, you may consider the Expert is qualified for the main competition. :juchu:

The second game is interesting as well; the Companion III playing as Black resists fiercely during 45 moves before commiting a deadly blunder :dead:.

...and here is the resulting tournament table for group 2:
Code:

1. Millenium The King Performance (lv N-5) 6 points
2. Novag Constellation Expert (lv 10) 4 points
3. Mephisto Rebell 5 (lv 2) 3.5 points, S/B 13.25
4. Scisys Chess Companion III (lv 3) 3.5 points, S/B 4.75
5. Excalibur Ivan the Terrible (lv 48) 3 points
6/7. Fidelity Chess Challenger 7 (lv 2) and Novag Octo (lv 4), 2 points
8. Novag Chess Champion Delta-1 (lv 15s), no points

Therefore, the King Performance and the Constellation Expert qualify for the main competition; whereas the Rebell 5 will enter the consolation cup.

Now, let's introduce group 3, where the Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 is the seeded player:

- Saitek Turbo King II
- Vonset / Femuey L6-v2
- Yeno 320XT
- Fidelity Champion Sensory Chess Challenger
- Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 9b
- Fidelity Mini Sensory Chess Challenger + CAC
- Novag Chess Champion Super System III

Well, I guess the L6-v2 and Turbo King II should qualify, and I am keen of watching how both Champion Sensory and Sensory 9b will fare... Who will deserve entering the consolation cup?

Let's figure it out...

Re: The 64-cup

Hello all,

first match is unbalanced, with close to 800 CElo points difference between the minuscule Calculator Chess and the Turbo King II (D+ program). At least they share the same brand, Saitek...

Surprisingly, the Calculator Chess plays relatively smart as White for 20-25 moves, despite not featuring any opening book and moving rather fast (higher levels can drift away from acceptable thinking time).
Of course the Turbo King II is a bit passive, particularly playing as Black, and it needs 50+ moves to wrap the win - but anyway a good performance from the tiny Craig Barnes program. :top:

The revenge is much different: the Calculator Chess never stands a firm foot on the ground, and the Turbo King II with light pieces destroys it in just 16 moves. :maul:

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

if previous match was unbalanced, what about this one? Nearly 1200 CElo points separate the Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 from the Yeno 320XT... And as far as processor speed is concerned, the L6-v2 is roughly ten thousands times faster... So even spending 0 (yes, zero!!) seconds on the clock for the whole game, whilst the Yeno used 15 secs. average per move, the Vonset just CRUSHED the Yeno. Indeed, this is unfair. But fun!:klatsch:
And I am pretty sure some of you will appreciate watching some games from the fairly unknown Chinese bomber. And of course stronger opponents will be thrown in front of it :box2: during the next stages of the competition...

Meanwhile, please be aware the first game is a gem, to my opinion: make sure you watch the final mate, leveraging two sacs in a row: a Rook then a Bishop...

While entering the moves across both computers, I input them on my favorite GUI (to get the PGN tracked) and sometimes activating HIARCS 15.2 live analysis, with four PVs displayed, to better check moves quality (as the standard was far too high for me, Vonset side of course). I noticed most if not all moves from the L6-v2 were always first choice... Therefore once the game completed, I ran a post-mortem analysis for the Vonset/Femuey moves only, using Deep HIARCS 15.2 with 2 threads (of Intel Core-i5 CPU) and 5 secs./move. According to my estimation, the laptop using two threads is about ten times faster than the Vonset; and the analysis engine is over 3.200Elo in CCRL 40/15 list, so fairly able to provide a trusted outcome. Result is included in the PGN data... Chess speaks for itself, as a famous chess player stated ...

Therefore I launched the same post-mortem analysis after the second game; to be honest it does not deserve as much interest as the first one; nevertheless the outcome of the analysis is amazing (for a chess computer, I mean).

Re: The 64-cup

Hi, good morning,

next match is rather classical, between two more or less closely related Fidelity Electronics devices: Champion Sensory Chess Challenger vs Sensory Chess Challenger 9b. Both are powered by a 6502 close to 2Mhz, the 9b born two years later has a slight theoretical edge program-wise. Nevertheless, the Champion deserves its name and is very successful: 2 points!

The first game is rather tactically complex to my eyes; the Champion gets an advantage smartly coordinating two pieces (N+B) while the 9b struggled to defend with its single Rook.

In the second game with opposite castlings, the 9b fails to take enough care of a pending strong attack from the Champion; its own attack it tried to develop on the other side of the board hanged fire. :headpat:

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

last game from round 1, group 3 is Fidelity Mini Sensory Chess Challenger with CAC module (Challenger Advanced Chess) vs Novag Chess Champion Super System III.

In the first game, the Novag is far from brilliant, with a very early offer for a fork the little Fidelity device failed to play. The game is then rather balanced (with some edge for the Mini Sensory, though) until an obvious positional blunder from the SSIII, moving its threatened King outside any safety. The Mini Sensory fails to spot a mate in 2 but remains easily winning; unfortunately no code inside prevents repetition and it messes up the full point for a draw.

The second game is not high quality, each device going back and forth according to several mistakes or missed opportunities. In the end a SSIII passed Pawn prevailed; it could have been blocked but the calculation was too much for the puny Mini Sensory.

Therefore, the SSIII scores 1.5 points vs the Mini Sensory 0.5.

Hello, Schönen Nachmittag Alle,

let's launch round 2 for group 3, starting with two devices currently lacking any point: the Yeno 320XT and the Saitek Calculator Chess. The Yeno is not a strong one, nevertheless its Danielsen's 4K program easily overwhelms the microscopic Calculator Chess: two points for the cheap, low-end Yeno (playing with "normal" style).

Re: The 64-cup

Hello,

this match provides an evidence: the Chess Champion Super System III is a smart teacher! :top:

Actually, it teaches you what you should NOT do. :vogel:

First game as Black facing the Turbo King II, it teaches you the power of Knight's forks. And as repeating is teaching, it loses its two Rooks the very same way!

Second game as White, it engages a nice (not so much) Queen journey to teach you what under-development can be. Cherry on the cake, it enables another Knight fork, a royal one. Did I mention repeating is teaching?

Re: The 64-cup

Guten Abend Alle,

the last match from round 2 (still group 3) sends the Fidelity Champion Sensory Chess Challenger under the wheels of the Vonset / Femuey L6-v2.

There is no :respekt: for old champions. :p

I just cannot understand some hard-to-justify moves from the early Spracklen's Fidelity program (1981): I suspect under tough pressure it can lose good sense (maybe the horizon effect...)

Re: The 64-cup

Hello,

next match is somewhat balanced: Fidelity Mini Sensory Chess Challenger + CAC vs Saitek Calculator Chess, with only 45 CElo points in favor of the Mini Sensory.

First game as White, the Mini Sensory keeps an edge for twenty moves or so; even with a couple of opportunities to get significantly better. But it failed twice to find the good move, and soon performed a mistake. Anyway a nice performance from the tiny Calculator Chess, winner as Black despite its Elo handicap.

In the second game, the Calculator Chess as White cannot renew this performance, with less than a dozen moves keeping the game approximately balanced. It is then a long journey for the Mini Sensory to achieve the win.

1 point each!

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

another easy match for the Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 9b, facing now the Novag Chess Champion Super System III.

Easy? Not so much, in the first game playing with light pieces, the Sensory 9b can only nibble at small advantages along the game, before promoting a Pawn on move 55. The CCSS III has been a good sparring partner, playing with dark pieces!

In the second game, on another hand, the CCSS III only resists 25 moves before inexplicably blundering. Indeed an easy win in 33 moves for the Sensory 9.

Re: The 64-cup

Good evening all,
now the Fidelity Champion Sensory Chess Challenger encounters the Yeno 320XT.

I trust the first game is a nice demonstration of the horizon effect: after a balanced series of moves, the Yeno performs a mistake that should cost it a Knight (3 points, so).

Well, instead of acknowledging that, it sacrifices a Rook for a Bishop. I strongly suspect the 2 points loss from this operation were considered a better option, assuming the 3 points loss has been pushed beyond the calculation horizon.

And the next move is again a sacrifice, a Bishop for a Pawn. Again a 2 points loss "avoiding" the pending loss of 3 points.

Unfortunately, that only postponed the unavoidable initial loss of a piece; therefore a total material loss of 2+2+3=7 points!! Then, of course, the Champion knows how to win.

The next game with Yeno as White is quickly decided, the Yeno blundered as soon as move 18, enabling an easy mate in 2.

Two points for the Champion.
