There are suggestions in bottom of page 6 in case of excessive current drain :

1. short traces on PCB
2. defective U1 ! (bad quality control process?)
3. contamination and/or foreign particules on PCB.

For 1 and 3, checking and cleaning the PCB.

The pdf document is great. But an attempt to diagnose and repair is beyond my expertise.

I will happily use my senator without a battery.
Most default settings are fine for me. All I change is the level, put random on, put full book on and adjust my rotating info settings.
