My first chess computer was a Mephisto Modular and I have always been fond of the Mephisto III program, even though it was weak. I have always been puzzled by the different numbers of the modules of the Mephisto III progam. Lately I have acqured a MM4500 module and I have testet it against the MM3000.

I have used the first 4 positions of Reinfelds 1001 brilliant ways to checkmate.

The result (level 6):
Pos 1 (MM3000 4:40 – move Bxf7 MM4500 4:40 – move Bxf7).
Pos 2 (MM3000 0:28 – move Qxf6 MM4500 0:24 – move Qxf6).
Pos 3 (MM3000 0:21 – move Qxh5 MM4500 0:25 – move Qxh5).
Pos 2 (MM3000 0:04 – move Nc7ch MM4500 0:08 – move Nc7ch).

I have read in the old Swedish magazine PLY that Mephisto changed the MMIII progam, without making a fuzz about it. The program that played in Glasgow should have been more aggressive than the earlier versions, but not much better.

Does anyone now when they changed the module name to 4500 and what significance it had. Was it a new progam version? My test indicates that the search is different in the two modules.
