Hi Franck,
thanks for your kind words. Talking about the average +60 elo points per speed doubling, it is indeed known, but I think it is relevant for computer performance in the context of either doubling the hardware speed, or allowing twice the time to move (and symetrically -60 for reducing 2 times), and in a limited range of times you apply this forecast. By the way, it might be up to +80 for the first doubling, then ramping down to the average +60, and less, should you continue doubling speed or time. I think it does not apply to severely throttling the program with a max number of nodes: The King moves instantly, or so. We are not in the area where The King would be on brakes by a few times less computing power, where the +/- 60 would apply. And keep in mind we are trying to baseline an elo level at active chess - meaning opponents fully benefit from 30s thinking time per move (plus pondering on operator time to move, at least, for those able to). So we have no experience nor reference there. Anyway, a linear interpolation (a line, to keep it simple) applied to a log function is exactly what I did to provide the first table I posted. And it shew +199 elo points per doubling. It was not so bad an approximation as far as the range was that of the easy levels, but would have provided definitely incorrect results at higher nodes/move (elo 3500@ 1million nodes, wtf ) Why do I write about 1M nodes/move? The unthrottled King computes in the area of 30.000 nodes/s, so needs 33seconds thinking time (as an order of magnitude) to reach this amount. We are in the area of active chess... The latest formula I provided would forecast slightly more than 2400 elo, unthrottled at active chess. Not so bad a forecast, isn't it? Kind regards, Eric |

Hi Eric, thanks a lot for the interesting response. Nevertheless, I just find a square approximation not useful, I stay with my log2-function. If I assign 1Mio nodes to 2.400ELO, the formula does not change a lot: throttled (w/o 1Mio/2.400): ELO=111*lg2(nps)+311 unthrottled (w 1Mio/2.400): ELO=102*lg2(nps)+400 If you use the unthrottled formula for the throttled region (1.050...1.850ELO), the difference is very small (-38...+60ELO). Best regards, Frank |

Hi Franck,
sorry, I don't see your point. I understand you use a base2 log instead of base10 log I did use, to rescale the x-axis. It is a smart choice for legibility, as each interval lands into a doubling factor. But this would change nothing but the formula for the interpolation line. Here is a graph including: - blue squares and interpolation line for the elo points we have so far (as I did for my very first graph, but including updated games results we got since) - orange line, the formula you suggest to approximate the elo according to log2(nodes): y=111,31x+311,31 The formula you suggest doesn't match the values we would like to approximate. Or did I miss something? The blue line formula is: y=171,4x - 184,49 So using your idea, the complete formula would be elo=171,4 * log2(nodes) - 184,49 resulting in: Code:
Nodes 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000 8000 16000 Calc_Elo 1009 1181 1352 1524 1695 1866 2038 2209 Adding a theoretical 2400 elo point for 1M nodes, and drawing an updated line on this basis, would result in a further distant line from the above blue squares. Thanks for your help, Eric |

Hi Wolfgang,
indeed ... in this 16000 nodes area, The King easy should be better on par with ~2150 elo opponents, according to my own forecast. The 1865 SuFo is way below. I think we would need more games using hereafter levels (and, if possible for diversity, different program authors as opponents): 1) Without any tests so far: @250 nodes, should be ~1170 average opponents @2000 nodes, should be ~1750 average opponents 2) Needing more data: @8000 nodes, should be ~2040 average opponents @16000 nodes, should be ~2150 average opponents I enjoy playing low level computers, so I will play and provide data for the @250 nodes. Anyone enjoying completing other levels data is very welcome, thanks! Kind regards Eric |

I will test the King 2000 the next weeks with a average opponent level about 1700.
So far, I mean the average levels from Tibono are a little bit to high. Greetings Mike |

Hi Eric, where did this formula (171,4) comes from? When I use the formula I calculated I get e.g.
Finetuning with new results and better fitting in the low-ELO-area are possible, Best regards, Frank |

Hi everybody,
please find attached the ELO-difference if you double the speed. Data are taken from the Aktiv-Schach ELO-Liste. Best regards Frank |
