Re: Chessnut Evo Maia v ChessGeniusPro 2024

Game 10/10

A few bad moves by both sides and the game ends with a draw.

The Four Knights, Spanish, Classical Defence was played until move 6.

Here is an example of the MCGP2024 making a bad move. This is the position after Maia had moved 11…Qh4

Black is in a good position with a strong King-side attack mounting and then the MCGP2024 played 12. Na4? Going after Black’s Bishop but 12. Qd2 would have been preferable. However, with the actual move played Black could have replied 12…Bg4 and White’s in danger of losing its Queen. However, the Maia bot did not ‘see’ the move 12…Bg4 and instead played 12…Bxh3? Play continued 13. Nxc5 dxc5 and the position is level:

The Maia had positioned its pieces well, with a strong King-side attack but threw it all away. It’s curious in away because in other games with such a mounting attack would relentlessly go in for the kill. I guess there are holes in its neuronal weights that the 6 ply search cannot help with.

The MCGP2024 can also make bad moves of course. Take the following position from the game:

Black had just moved 22…Nf4 and again it’s looking very dangerous for White. Here it played 23. Kh1?? Play could have continued 23…Qh4+ 24.Kg1 Qg3 25. Qxa7 Bh3 and White can do nothing about it! Alas, the 6 ply depth is not enough for the Maia bot to calculate this and the neuronal weights data doesn’t help!

There are quite a few mistakes and inaccuracies in this game and positions where Maia missed winning opportunities. Maybe the MCGP2024 was lucky in getting a draw!

So we have the final score of 6 – 4 to the MCGP2024.

The Wiki Elo list gives the MCGP2024 an active rating of 2339 so in this match that gives the Maia 1900 bot a rating of around 2269 which is not bad considering it was trained from human play rated at 1900 and only 6 ply search. I’m not sure how the depth searching affects the human-like play of Maia but I think it’s possibly wrong to call it Maia, maybe Hybrid Maia is more appropriate? I also wonder what depth setting is required to make Maia 1900 actually play at 1900? Maybe a future project.

Overall, it was an interesting match and highlighted what the Maia data can achieve with some look ahead. It also proved to me how good the MCGP2024 is and glad I own this little machine.

Re: Chessnut Evo Maia v ChessGeniusPro 2024

Hot off the back of my first match here are the results of the second 10 game match between the MCGP2024 and the Chessnut Evo Maia1900 bot set to look 6 ply ahead. This time I set the MCGP2024 to use the Modern (HIARCS) book and expected its result to be less than from the first match where it used the smaller Classic book. This subject has been covered before so I won’t dwell on the subject just that the ChessGenius program seems to perform better with the smaller book.

As a change from my previous posts, will just make a few comments on particular games but will include analysis from my PC engine. I think by now we all realize these dedicated machines make mistakes and will miss chances.

In the first match I based my estimated ELO rating of the Maia bot using the rating for the MCGP2024 on the Wicki ELO List web site (2339 for Active play). However, as the performance of the ChessGenius program can vary depending on the opening book used and I don’t know which book was used to calculate the Wicki ELO value I’m not sure how accurate my value of 2269 can be, but the performance difference of 70 points will be in the ball park for that match.

In the second match the result is quite different and this time the Maia bot won with a score of 5 ½ - 4 ½. This is around 35 points difference or half that from the first round.

There was some very exciting play but also some big mistakes from both sides. The first game however, is a draw:

They played the Scotch, Goering Gambit and eventually the MCGP2024 offered a draw and I accepted on behalf of the Maia to save my time!

This is a surprising game in my opinion and reveals how weak the MCGP2024 is in defending against King-side attacks.

All was about level until MCGP2024’s 19th move and then it lost in dramatic style!
In the following position Maia with the white pieces has a massive King-side attack whilst Black’s pieces are in the side lines:

Here the MCGP2024 moved 20…e5?? It has no fear! But 21.g6 and it would have soon been all over. However, Maia did not see this move but the end result is the same and a checkmate in only 27 moves.

The Ruy Lopez, Schliemann Defence was played and it all started to go wrong for the MCGP2024 at move 10. The Maia bot again stormed into the enemy camp with all its pieces lined up in good positions. The pressure was overwhelming and the MCGP2024 resigned.

This time the Maia bot is again trying a King-side attack:

It looks quite bad for Black but the position is not straight forward. Black is up a Knight, has a Pawn keeping one of White’s Rooks busy, and White’s Bishops are not exactly helping a great deal. Black does have to be very careful though!

A little later and the position is:

Here Maia played 32. Bh6+ Why not take the troublesome pawn on a2? Play continued 32…Ke8 33. Raf1?? Should have taken the pawn! From here the MCGP2024 played correctly and won the game. I think the Maia bot likes to check at the cost of making a better move.

An interesting game!

Analysing with PC engines highlights that White should have won but they were searching very deeply and way beyond Maia’s capability.

Game 7/10

The Scotch, Goering Gambit was played and the MCGP2024 dominates most of the game and wins.
The Maia bot makes a surprising blunder!

In the following position from the game White had just moved 37. Qd6:

Here Maia played 37…Qxa4?? Was it throwing the towel in? The MCGP2024 followed correctly with 38. Nc3 and Black’s Rook is lost.

The position after Maia moved 23. exd5:

White is a Rook and Pawn down but does have a Bishop. Here the MCGP2024 played 23…Qb6?? Black really needs to attack the opposing Queen with 23…Rc7 followed by Qd7 instead has moved the Queen to attack a Pawn away from all the dangerous action! However, a few moves later and the Maia blunders and Black plays well to its winning conclusion!

After the opening stage things started to turn in favour of Black. Here is the final position when MCGP2024 resigned:

It was just a matter of time!

The pawn march started at move 17 and it’s amazing that the MCGP2024 allowed it to happen.
