Tablet Chess Computer

If you are like me then you probably have a few old tablets lying in your draw, perfectly ok but unable to run any of the latest apps. I have now found a great way to resurrect my old iPad 2 into a chess computer with real pieces.

I once read an article about how you could make your own tablet stylus with a piece of wood and some copper or aluminium tape. I thought that maybe I could also apply this theory to produce a tablet chess computer board.

Luckily I had a small silver and gold chess set that sat nicely on my iPad Shredder app. I used Shredder because it has a blindfold chess option that just highlights the computers moves.

Next we look at how the pieces can work on a tablet screen. With a thin piece of copper or aluminium foil stuck length ways along the side of the chess pieces, the static electricity from your finger will run down them to the tablet screen just like a stylus would.

I bought some self adhesive copper and aluminium tape (luckily the same colour as my chess pieces) and then stuck a thin strip down one side of the piece then under the base and back up the other side.

If you look at photo one you can see both the copper and aluminium tape fixed to the pieces.

Now all you need to do is start the app, place the pieces on the tablet and have yourself a game of chess.
