AW: The 64-cup

Good afternoon to everyone,

now a match with some fair chances both sides: Novag Constellation Expert vs Saitek/Mephisto Chess Challenger 10Mhz. That's roughly 1/3 to 2/3 odds...

The first game with Constellation Expert playing White is a nice one, very seriously played by the Kittinger protégé. It kept an edge for 30 moves or so, before demonstrating how advanced Knights can shake a position . As a result, a mighty Pawns majority, and advanced ones on top of that, on Queen side. The Mephisto Chess Challenger is compelled to sacrifice a Bishop + a Rook to stop these, and game over .

The second game looks the other way around, with the Morsch program being up all game long. The fall of the Constellation Expert speeds up after a tentative to attack the ennemy King that looks under PSH influence, but not that a relevant one. Here, PSH surely stands for "Passt Sicher Halbwegs"

Well, shared score, lets go for another couple of games.

Despite playing White again, the Constellation Expert stays on par only 15 moves or so, then loses an edge, and loses more starting from around move 20. Not a great game from the Expert, now led 1 to 2 points.

In the revenge game, the lead is almost constantly on the White side (Saitek/Mephisto Chess Challenger) except for several periods where the Constellation Expert had opportunities to aim for a draw, using checking repetitions (Queen against exposed ennemy King). Despite not fully leveraging these chances, the Expert is lucky enough (or strong enough) to re-enter a final drawing sequence and save half a point .

Final score is 2.5 to 1.5, winner is the Chess Challenger, so moving up to quarter-final.

The Constellation Expert leaves the competition, it has been a real pleasure to operate this so nice device running an interesting chess program.
