AW: Belgian Closed Tournament

Runde 1

MMV (1982) - Stefan (1899) 1 - 0

Clash !

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nc6 5. Nb5 d6 6. c4
{Really the best white setup in the Taimanov / Paulsen in my opinion as it
gives white the better piece play despite its initial lacking of development.}
Nf6 7. N5c3 Be7 8. Be2 O-O 9. O-O b6 10. Be3 {Normally Bf4 is played} Ba6 11.
f4 Rc8 12. Nd2 Qc7 (12... Na5 13. b3 $11 (13. Nb5 Nxc4 14. Bxc4 Rxc4 15. Nxc4
Bxb5 16. Qb3 $15)) 13. a3 Rfd8 14. Rc1 Nb8 $6 {
With the idea Nbd7 & Nc5 but the idea fell ashort} 15. b4 Nbd7 {
And black is lacking space... something that will be going on for a while.} (
15... Bb7 $4 16. Nb5) 16. Bf3 Qb8 {MM V gave himself +0,37} 17. Qb3 {The fortif
ication of the position continues and black has no other play then to wait
like a SNAKE} (17. Qa4 Bxc4 18. Nxc4 Rxc4 19. Nb5 $16) 17... Bb7 (17... b5 18.
cxb5 Bxb5 19. Nxb5 Qxb5 20. Bxa7 $18) 18. Rcd1 Ba8 {
I wanted to play a6 or a5 but did find that this would weaken b6} 19. Rfe1 a5 {
a6 was better or even h5} 20. g3 {The compi clearly has no plan} (20. Nb5 e5
21. f5 Bc6 22. Nc3 $16) 20... axb4 21. axb4 {
This way white keeps the initiative !} (21. Qxb4 Nc5 22. Rf1 $15 (22. Rb1 $2
Nd3)) 21... Bc6 {+0,46 according to the MMV} 22. Bf2 h5 $6 {
With the idea Ng4 Bd5 e5} 23. Nd5 {
A complete surprise, and based on the fact that Be7 is undefended.} Bf8 (23...
exd5 24. exd5 Bxd5 25. cxd5 Re8 $16) (23... Nxd5 $4 24. cxd5 $18 Bb5 25. dxe6

Nxf6+ Nxf6 25. b5 {Again white keeps black under pressure and still black has
no counterplay. Accoring to MM V +1,09} Ba8 26. Qe3 Ng4 (26... d5 27. cxd5 exd5
28. Qxb6 Qxb6 29. Bxb6 Rd6 30. e5 (30. Ba5 dxe4 31. Nxe4 $4 Nxe4 32. Bxe4 Rxd1

Qxb8 Rxb8 30. Rb1 dxc4 (30... d4 $16) 31. Nxc4 f6 {
Aimed against Ne5, as I wanted to play Rd3} 32. Rb3 Bc6 {A bad idea, I was
finally getting some air... and now I decided to go for a dubious move.} 33.

Prepares for h3 or h4 at least an attempt to win the game !} Rc3 62. h4 g6 (

white has the clear advantage}) 63. Rb1 Rc2+ 64. Kh1 Rc3 65. Kh2 Rc2+ 66. Kg1
Rc3 67. Rb5 {And here the MMV only gave himself +0,44} Rc5 $2 {
again a missed chance on a quicker draw} (67... Rc1+ $1 68. Rxc1+ Kxb5 {
This is a draw game}) 68. R5b2 Rc3 {
Looked to me that g3, e4 & b6 are weak and this would assure the draw.} 69. Kg2

you'd see this draw as the king can't escape the checks , unless he want to
get checkmated !} Rc2+) 74. Rd1+ Ke6 75. Re1 Rc2+ 76. Kg1 Rc3 77. Kf2 Rc6 $2 {
My last chance on a draw, as a serious error is around the corner....} (77...

$4 {The fatal error, now all my pawn come weak after a subtle move from a move
I didn't see coming....} 81. Rxb3 Kd6 82. Rb5 {A move I didn't see when I
exchanged rooks.... now the game is lost as the white king marches to his pawn
on b6 and nothing is going to stop him doing so.} Ke6 83. Kd2 {
I surrended, as there is no more hope.} 1-0
