Group A Round 1 Match of the Day

(1) Resurrection Ruffian 2.1 (2359) - Mephisto Lyon 68020 22Mhz (2275) [C48]
ICMCCC - 2007 - Group A Hoover, Alabama, 30sec/move (1), 20.08.2007

There can hardly be a better way to wet your appetite for the start of a new Tournament when you have the 2006 World Champion meet a narrowly losing quarter-finalist of 2006 and 2007.
These machines looked as if they knew whom they were up against with Lyon choosing a defensive looking Four Knights opening against the former World Champion. Neither side made any errors nor looked towards making any threats against the other opponent. In fact by move 16 the Endgame phase was already approached after some quick piece exchanges culminating with both Queens leaving the board. A draw seemed certain at this point. Computer analysis at a depth of 20 half moves showed =(-0.13).

From this point onwards both machines started to play some interesting cat and mouse play searching for optimal placement of their pieces while testing the opponent’s defense for any weakness.

By move 33 Ruffian who was trying to force the play, had maneuvered his kingside pawns into a position to make some exchanges, which resulted in a passed h-pawn. This however did not pose much of a threat to Lyon since both his King and Rook were well positioned to defend the h-file. In fact this later proved to be the decisive turning point of the game with Lyon using his Rook to quickly take control of the open g-file which seemed to unsettle Ruffian enough to allow Lyon to get behind Ruffian’s defense with his Rook.

Seizing his opportunity for the kill Lyon with some skillful positional moves behind the enemy lines pressured Ruffian into defensive moves and errors and by move 48 after the exchange of Rooks the game was lost.

A fantastic performance by Lyon who is not normally known for his endgame to so convincingly out-smart the former World Champion.

Mephisto Portorose had the better position after this Sicilian Opening but after the bad decision to exchange Queens on move 26 and allow the Chessmachine a strong passed h-pawn; the game was lost a few moves later.

A short game and some very strange play by Mephisto Risc II. As you can see from the above diagram he gave up a pawn quickly after the opening. He also lost another a few moves later. Christian and I had Chessgate problems when we played so we had to adjourn the game. However, we both agreed that the game was lost for Risc II. Analysis by Fritz 8 at 14/43:

Poor Cosmos 24Mhz lost a pawn after 7 moves in this variation of the Giuoco Piano. After this he tried hard to stay in the game but Magellan kept the pressure on throughout the game and finally completely broke down Cosmos defenses.

This is one of the games Christian played by himself at home. I know he enjoyed this game very much and was very pleased with the way that Elite V10 played this Queens Gambit Accepted. V10 worked itself nicely into a positional advantage, which it kept throughout the game. Sapphire had to work hard to stay in touch and may have salvaged a draw in the end. The diagram above shows what I believe to be the critical position where Sapphire should have taken the pawn on f2. Interesting game.

In this Schmid Benoni opening there was an interesting exchange on move 16 of a white Bishop and Pawn again Milano Pro’s black Rook giving RS 2250XL the better position after the opening. The diagram shows the critical turning point of the game. RS 2250XL chose to exchange Queens probably thinking that a simplified position would be better later for its two Rooks. This turned out to be a mistake especially since 20.Na5 looked very promising. Milano Pro skillfully took advantage of his pawn majority in the center to win the game.
