Re: ChessGenius PRO 2024 version

Well my unit was delivered today, one day earlier than estimated.

First impressions are much the same as others have mentioned but I'll express my thoughts so far:

I very much like the more compact design, and the sensor board which is very much improved over the old Pro, not to mention the awful sensor board on the original Millennium CG. It makes the process of entering moves effortless but I Keep thinking I need to press hard, and then realize that just a light press is enough.

I must support other's thoughts on the display. It is very nice and the colour is a bonus if not essential. This display is another big improvement over the older CGP, it's much easier to see despite being quite small, but being smaller helps with keeping costs and power usage down.

I believe it now has the updated CG engine as used in the Exclusive CG Element but running on the same processor as the original CGP. What I don't know is if there have been any changes to the opening books? The old CGP had two books, the Classic (57,000 moves) and the Modern(100,000 moves), without a detailed manual I'm guessing the new CGP has the same books and size.

On the negative:
The volume is too quiet for move announcement, but too loud for the power on tune!

The original CGP detects when on mains power and keeps the display illuminated. The new CGP dims the display even when on mains which is a shame but not the end of the world.

I don't need to discuss the analysis mode deficiencies, but to mind this is not a show stopper. It can be made to analyse for possibly 8 hours, so this enough for me. I intend to use it mainly for play whilst sat on the sofa and learn some book openings. The fact that the CGP2024 displays the opening name is very nice.

I've started a 10 game match between the old and the new CGPro's at 40moves/2 hours using the Classic(London) book on each and both set to Normal play style. I think the smaller book results in better performance from these CG machines at least against another computer. I will post the results here once completed. I suspect the games will be close if not a draw, but we may see some difference with the newer program in the CGPro2024.

One thing I wanted to try but this will have to wait until the current game is completed, is if the 12 game memory slots are non volatile memory. The King/CG Elements for the Exclusive boards have non-volatile memory because even disconnected from mains power, saved games are preserved.

Maybe this is asking too much at the price point of the CGPro2024.
