There is certainly an argument that for good analysis of a chess position this is best given to the top engines running on fast hardware. Programs such as Stockfish, Komodo Dragon etc., can all provide very accurate results in just seconds.

However, I think the reason for wanting long analysis on a dedicated machine is down to a love of the machine itself and seeing what it can achieve when given enough time. I have asked myself for example "I wonder if my Advanced StarChess could find the solution if I leave it thinking for a day or a week?"

Often though, I would give up as would be keen on using the machine for something else!
